Unhappy Help! My new Opteron doesn't fit onto my Mobo! Need a new mobo!

    Just kidding.

    Hello.

Can anyone help me to pick a new motherboard for my grandpa's 92nd birthday?

He reckon he fancy GA-7N400V Pro if only FSB -ever- gets upped to "true" 400 (The ones Dabs, etc. sell only do 333)

Grandpa' likes IDE Raid, but not so sure if he wants SATA raid at the moment.

He also wants to know if 7N400 V Pro which is IGP is worth it. Is it better to get a cheaper nF2 motherborad and get a decent G-card?

Grandpa' says most nF2 motherboards don't support IDE raid, but is it true? Does that mean I have to spend extra drachmas to get a RAID controller/adaptor thingy for me grandpa'?

Grandpa' says nVidia better get its lazy ass off from bog seat and incorporate SATA onto its chip set.

Now, please wish my grandpa' a happy birthday.

    Thank you.

Well, Gigabytes mobos have IDE RAID and SATA RAID. My grampa' just don't want SATA which is still in its infancy and just a gimmick to hike the price up.

He says that those manufacturers - which, incidentaly, most are sub-branchies of a bigger manufacturer - get their rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish together and make nF2 mobo with IDE RAID without SATA controler thingy.

You can run normal non-SATA drives in RAID with the NF7.

Your grandpa knows what he wants. He wants the NF7-S. He will use the s-ata raid and the serillel convertors for his ide drives. To do this he will have to buy another serillel convertor and s-ata cable, but that doesn't matter, he is getting money from his pension

surely that's negligable considering p// ata uses 3-5% cpu anyway.

    OK.

So, my grampa' needs cheaper nF2 chipset mobo and a RAID converter?

What's the point of SATA option at this moment in time? I mean, SATA harddrives from WD and Seagate do 150. In a couple of months, SATA goes up to 300. Six hundred a few months after that. So, chaps who got SATA 150 harddrives need another up-grading if he were to get maxmum performance.

What of SATA converter? Does it hundle 300 and 600? Isn't it likely to be a bottle neck? (Why do I feel Billy G is behaind all this? I wouldn't be surprised if Billy G's multi-billion $$$ are behind AMD/IBM/Linux who are supposedly fighting against MS/Intel)

the sata/ide converter will run at 133...
This is also true for all true sata drives as well.... as the sata controller runs off the PCI bus which has a max transfer of 133...

Your not gonna get your 150 speed no matter what

of course gramps knows this..... as he mentioned the complaint about sata not being integrated with the southbridge...

Yep. My gramdpa' knew about current SATA 133 bottleneck.

Also, ATA 133 is said to be out of fashion. ATA 100 is maxed. It'll shift to true SATA i.e. 150/300/600.

So, if you just have happened to have bought two ATA133/SATA harddrives, you are damned.
