Which SATA DVD-RW?

Hi,

I am in the market for a new SATA DVD-RW drive. Yes, exciting I know...

What is the fastest drive on the market at the mo. I have software so an OEM would be ideal. Going to wait for all the BlueRay / HD-DVD hype to die down.

Also, where is the best place to buy DL media?

You do not need a sata dvd drive as you are limited by the read speed of the drive. Get a pata drive with good read/write speed as its cheaper. Only reason to go sata is for easy connection.

I understand the SATA PATA debate but would like to rid my case of those PATA cables. I have rounded cables but they still seem to take up loads of space in my case. Am I vain?

Mmmm, perhaps I should really be after performance over aesthetics. Oh, the choices in life....

I went for a Lite-On SATA drive because my new mobo has only got one IDE port and I wanted to use my 2 existing IDE drives as additional to the Boot SATA one. Plus it's one less IDE cable floating around.

wait...are sata dvdrw drives slower than ide ones in some way, or is there just no extra benefit from the sata interface?
if they perform the same me thinks il be getting some sata drives too...its about time IDE died imo

performance is the same, the limitation is the speed of writing/reading of the physical drive, not the interface it's attached to.

I got one just to dump my last IDE cable

Well not really anymore cheaper in a meaningful way, the difference in price between the Pioneer DVR-111D PATA and the Samsung SH 183A SATA (both dual layer - both with good rep and reviews), was only 54p.

Its annoying that there isnt more SATA drives around, especially with some motherboards that dont actually have PATA connections on them anymore (Intel 965 chipset?)

965 boards still have a single PATA (2 devices).

There seems to be plenty of SATA DVD drives available, enought cirtainly to make a choice from, and they are all probably pretty good and a few if not most very good.

It is a competative low value market (£20 is reduculously cheap) that any rubbish devices will soon be found and the company would not sell. If you don't sell, you don't stay in business. You gotta sell a lot to make up the R&D and make a profit.

ive gone for the samsung one that was in first reply. Great drive no problems atall.

Same with hard drives mate. They're not even reaching the speed of SATA let alone SATA2. You don't see so many IDE drives around though
