found some old hardware - try it out ?

digging around my old base unit this morning for my old MRI adsl modem as my 3com router had packed up last night and found a few bits...

    512mb of ddr crucial ram
    mx440 gfx agp
    sb live card
    network card
    cdrom
    cdrw drive
    floppy drive
430w arianet psu - this was brand new as I thought a new psu may be the solution to a lightening strike, but no luck

Tempted to put in the ram to my existing system to see if it will work.

Reason it had not occured to me previously was that the old machine had packed up with a lightening strike, chap I took it too (prior to me understanding the workings of a pc) told me it was the mobo, cpu or ram that was fried - so I wrote off the all three...

If I try out the ram, will it just not show up if borked ?

would it be wise to take out my present 2gig and put in the old ram, or shall I just throw it in next to my existing ram?

as for the rest I am tempted to throw it in the skip along with the case and s478 mobo - do you reckon there would be anybody interested in the above parts?

posted here in case there is

Stuff like that would be ideal for fixing other people's PC's. Personlay I would hang onto most of it for that reason.

As for selling it, the PSU is probably worth money if it is quality, and you might be able to get £10 each for the memory and graphics card, but the value of the rest probably would not cover postage.

The other thing I might do with a pile of old parts like that would be to sell them to my colleges for nominal sums. There is an electronic for sale forum at my company, where all sorts of random old tat (as well as new quality stuff) turns up, and gets sold for a couple of quid.

The psu isnt worth anything. The words "Arianet" and "PSU" in the same sentence....shudder.

I agree, its probably worth keeping for spares.

lol I remeber buying the psu now and I wanted cheap as chips just to see if it was the psu that needed replacing

bought from a dodgy computer shop across the way from Gateway House next to Piccadilly station in manchester

up and running on the mci modem - cool

realised the ram is sdram so not a fit for the ddr board

    cheers

eeeew that arianet word again it was one of those that murdered my mates brand new athlon system. I had a dvd player made by them and it was terrible, Aria had it for over half of the 12 months warranty. Avoid anything with the Aria/Arianet brand name.

Delivery is no faster than most other places and their RMA process is laughable and on a par with overclockers, so in my opinion, it wasnt unfair.

Yep I returned a faulty card reader once and last I heard it's still being tested and I haven't received a refund.
