    Athlon XP temps?

    Hi,

I'm building a HTPC and have an Athlon XP 1900+ in a Silverstone Sugo. If I leave the computer on in the BIOS, the CPU temp gets to 50c after about 10 mins. Is this a dangerously high temperature? I'm using the stock HSF with it. Was wondering if I would need a bigger cooler.

    Cheers

I've been using one for a year now (Barton 3200+) I get around 40/42oC on idle, going upto just over 50oC on load. This is using a Gigabyte G-Power Pro.

I think anywhere below 60oC is safe for the XP's though as from my experience they run pretty hot, certainly a lot hotter than current gen CPU's.
I'd definately suggest a better cooler if you can go for it, but I don't think the temps are too dangerously high just yet.

I could be very wrong though, so I'm sure someone will come in and correct me

well codfather has a barton core which is fairly efficient but obviously its a lot faster so thats why its still quite hot

you on the other hand have a palomino core, the room heater of its day

so your temps are normal even though youre 600mhz slower

tbh id swap it for a thoroughbred or barton, there are mobile versions of each which will be cool with quiet cooling

Yup, Athlon XPs will run pretty hot - I got mine down to 36oC idle and 41-42 under load by using a Thermalright SI-97 and some beefy case fans. My old Palmino core Athlon still runs at circa 50 all day, so its not unusually high....

If you're worried about it, see if you can increase your case airflow, or get a bigger copper cooler for it, and a 80 or 92mm fan - it'll then be quiet while providing large amounts of airflow.

    Hope this helps

My Asus A7V333 used to report higher temps than they actually were. I managed to destroy the motherboard whilst updating the BIOS so it could report lower temps. The next mobo (same one) I bought was already flashed and it reported about 10C less.

I changed the cooler to a Zalman clone plus the processor is now a Thoroughbred. These may have played a part.

My SVHS cable should be arriving today so I can install XP on the pc this afternoon. I'll monitor the temps in windows with speedfan and see how high it gets under load.

As a side note, does anyone know how I can power more system fans? My case came with 3 but my motherboard only has a connection for one.

    Cheers

if you are gettin 50 in bios being idle then yea its a little high, under load you could be getting 65+

Try re-applying some compound and re-seating your HSF

The older 130nm designs took a lot more voltage, 1.7v was stock for some and overclocked you could easily put 2v through some of the mobile chips...

Ive had an xp 3400 chip for 2 years now and its been running hot from the start, my pc is constantly on and always used! Even with a freezer pro for the hsf!

It used to run around 40 degress and now its average is 60 to 70, which is hot, but its run at 90-100 which is stupidly hot, but its only crashed a few times?

Ive now removed the pro fan and attached 2 80mm fans either side of the heatsink and im getting a reasonable 40 to 60 degrees from boot to gaming, with a 120mm pulling out the rear.

So, id say compared to the heats my pc has reached, i wouldnt say thats a dangerous heat! haha!
