Bah! Stupid computer and its endless problems :D

I don't know if any of you guys remember but ages ago I was getting popping noises from my sound card. They never really went away so I just ignored them. Well... the time has come to replace the recordings on my bands MySpace (at last) and I need the clicking to go away. I know it isn't the sound card itself as I have tried different cards (and the onboard sound) and since then I've replaced the power supply, graphics card, hard drive (quite dramatically *sizzle*) and even the optical drives! All that leaves is the processor, ram and mobo. I think the most likely is the mobo but I thought I would check with you guys first .

Edit: Or could it be that my processor just cant hack it? Even though it does it playing mp3 in foobar.

Having had an M-Audio soundcard, I do know how fussy they are with what gear they are inserted into. I also know that M-Audio support told me that they had never heard of DFI motherboards and to buy a more reputable brand...Anyway, to cut a long story short, the crackling and popping problems WERE down to the M-Audio drivers and their incompatabilities with the Nforce 4 chipset drivers.

Unfortunately, I was only able to free myself of the horrible popping and clicking by changing to an Auzentech soundcard, which of course is no good for you, so I would recommend changing to something other than an Nforce 4 chipset motherboard.

Since I have changed to the Intel chipset, I havent had a single popping or crackling.

sorry, for some reason, I just guessed it was an nforce 4

Well, if its crackling on the onboard sound, then I would be checking that there are no shorts, and everything that should be earthed is earthed properly.


Edit: you are disabling the onboard sound in the bios when you use your m-audio arent you?
Have you tried building up the motherboard on some cardboard to see if it still does it?

I hope you HAVE been ignoring them. They were done 3 years ago when we first started... on a tape recorder. Remember those?

I would be checking that there are no shorts, and everything that should be earthed is earthed properly.

Doesn't it usually hummmmm if its an earth problem? I do have pretty dirty power here but its all surge protected etc.

Have you tried building up the motherboard on some cardboard to see if it still does it?

I would almost certainly blow something up... or electrocute someone . Could it be the case then? Mine is a bit cheap.

theres nothing wrong with even a really cheap case if everything is attached properly. apart from it looking like crap and getting warm and cutting your fingers off. its the components inside it.

I had a Terratec DMX6fire and that had a clicking and popping problem, that was solved by fitting 4 plastic washers to the screws that held in the breakout box to the case. (technically this is the opposite to making sure things are earthed properly eh?)

It could also be an irq problem..any conflicts in device manager?

No conflicts. Its using IRQ 11 (the m-audio). Whats an SM Bus Controller and should it have a big ? next to it?
