    What happened to S939?!

Unlike the demise of socket A (where a variety of quality motherboards were available long after the best CPUs had disappeared), what happened to S939?!

There's still plenty of good S939 CPUs out there, but finding a motherboard to suit your needs is like finding hen's teeth!

I'd like to build an HTPC with an mATX motherboard that supports S939 so that I can use the RAM from my current S939 system (which badly needs an upgrade to 2Gb).

Can I find one for love nor money? Nope!

I can however buy a multitude of AM2 boards which would mean buying even more RAM than I'd like.

There are even more S754 boards available, however S754 CPUs (except Sempron 2800s) are once again like hen's teeth.

S754 seems to have died out like socket A did, but S939 is another beast altogether.

In conclusion, I think I might just forget about an HTPC and get an HD recorder and a cheap hi-fi instead. Invariably it'll be cheaper anyway!

    Rant ends!

i was in the sort of same boat, after shifting to core2duo, i was toying with the idea of using my old 939 bits for an HTPC, and i can say there are no MATX 939 boards available new, so i got mine from ebay (well it hasnt arrived yet but still!) point being have a look on ebay?

Yes, and there are still literally thousands of medium / high end CPUs out there but few mobos to support them. Not at all like other EOL AMD CPUs such as S462 & S754 which was the point of my earlier post...

You answered my reason for not using ebay in your own post... I don't fancy being ripped off...

Just make sure you buy from a good bidder with a good rating level. Check the Sell your Stuff section also, and put a post in the Wanted section.

Sounds like a good deal. I might even be tempted to jump on the ebay bandwagon! Was that from an ebay shop?

I agree, such poor availability/selection of 939 boards is something I really did not expect.

Its almost as though AMD are in league with the board manufacturers to try and force folks down the AM2 route. Inadvertantly, it looks like its resulting in more folks going over to Intel...

Exactly, the thought had crossed my mind. With no gain in am2 and the outlay of rip off ddr2 memory, if I was going to buy ddr2 at this time it would be for c2d. I have been looking at the various etailers and for example ebuyer have FIVE 939 boards, aria had the a dfi ultra d for £70, but the best I could find was lowest with the msi neo4 for £53 or there abouts del, savastore have a b-grade msi neo 4 for £37. Personally I like to keep a spare board or 2, just incase, but nothing available just now that I want. Oh yes komplett have a MSI K8N SLI-FIfor £53

Possibly, but that depends on the picture being accurate - they aren't always...

That link is definately for an S754. All the ASUS 754 boards start with a "K" prefix, and their 939's with an "A" prefix.

Like I said earlier, 754 boards are plentiful!
