my mate got one of these:

for christmas... however its awful on the tv, even with an antenna adapter thingy. now im thinking he could be better off with a tv card, and a normal tft monitor? can a tv card not give great reception and no need for any fancy monitor or antenna? also, could he not then afford a better quality/bigger monitor?
your views and reccomendations, please :)
and merry christmas!

expensive tv cards can give great reception. Cheap ones give less good reception, I have a £20ish compro one and have to switch between my normal tv ariel for most channels to the portable one that is stuck to the radiator at a funny angle for the tv. But in what way is it bad for the tv - poor clarity or breaking up entirely?

some channels bad reception (really bad), other channels no signal at all

do you have any external arial source ?
there is no substitue for a good quality antenna on the roof, check the room its in with another portable area type, no point looking at anything different if that roof is a real black spot

i have a £60 firewire one connected to an external ariael and it works great
