    Mouse Wars: MX310 vs. IE4.0

    Logitech MX310
    Logitech MX500
    Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 4.0

Prefer my mice wired thanks ;-)

Is this IE4.0 the one with the wheel that wobbles sideways? I was in staples today and they had some MS desktop sets where the mice had the rockable wheels and nice smooth rolling.

Most importantly: tracking. I've heard great things about the MX optical engine stuff and was wondering if anyone's read any good reviews for the new IE4.0. I use my mice straight onto the desktop, at home and at uni, so whichever mouse offers the best tracking is mine

Could be persuaded by lots of buttons/wheels/comfort though

/edit - and I'm right handed, so no issues there

either way grab yourself a func1030 from www.alienware.co.uk bargain at £15 inc postage (well £8 + postage so if u buy more stuff its even more worth it)

itll make any mouse u buy a lot better

i am not sure if the new MS IE uses a "4th generation" optical technology or not.. but i'm assuming it does not as there are no news about it.. even MS doesn't mention about it.. so MS IE still uses the same optical tech like the IE3.0 but with the new tilt wheel thingy.. if you like the smooth scrolling then get it..
pick one which suits your palm best

Sorry I think I might have bought the last Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 4.0 from komplett yesterday they only had one in stock.

It seems hard to get hold of the wired ones, I didnt want the wireless ones which seem more common.

I hope the tilt buttons will be good.

Aye, let us know what it's like!

The smooth scroll wheel felt.... weird. But nice.

I use an MX 310 at home becuase I get RSI so taught myself to be ambidexterous with mice and a right-hand only mouse would be of no use to me. The MX310 is very good and tracks well. My preffered mousing surface is a 99p black material mouse mat.

THG definitely prefer the MX310 over the 4.0

    http://www20.tomshardware.com/consum...0/mice-17.html

but then again the reason that I didn't notice this review ages ago was that I'd stopped checking THG because of obvious issues with the quality of reporting.

MX310 it is, so long as I can try one out somewhere first! Funnily enough, Grimsby doesn't have a PC world yet!

    I should have listened
I am trying to RMA my Intellimouse v4 back to komplett, the middle mouse button works only intermittently, the left button double clicks regularly by itself. The "tilt" buttons are pretty useless because you cant remap them...

Bought it less that 30 days ago and its faulty, am I entitled to a refund I wonder?

while the mx310 does look resonably useable in terms of comfort, i htink i would still prefer my ball.
Could be persuaded by lots of buttons/wheels/comfort though
look at the buttons on that POS. hard plasticy SMALL and they look cheap, sorta liek they might break. also with CRAPPY ANNOYING PICTURES ON THEM!!!!

precision and aiming being the most important things, i think a ball is just nicer. btw i have used both a mx500, and this as well as many other mouses and had a few months use out of each.
btw, bs2k1's do not get filled with small bits of your hair and skin like normal ball mice do, somehow the uber scientest people that designed these made it impossible for any dust to get it - ive owned mine ages and only cleaned wice and neitehr time was it needed

redputty - what OS are you using? in win2k and xp they *should* be remappable but that might be only for usb HID mouses. also it will depend on the game as some developers chose to be annoying tards.

    You've never used a MX700 have you?

I used to be a dedicated wired user until I tried the MX700, will never go back.
Seriously, give it a look, worth every penny.

yes they should replace it because its actually faulty but I was going to try the mx instead. oh well.
I run win xp and its connected via USB. as far as I can see the tilt wheel isnt remappable, the middle mouse button is but only to a pre determined set of options.

Its not too bad I suppose as hopefully games will be able to remap it but I would have liked the tilt buttons as alt-tab.
The other annoying thing is I couldnt get the scroll wheel to be reliable in games, unlike the old intellimouse it has a much smoother movement but this makes it hard to switch weapons.

Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 4.0 ofc, one of the best mice there is ofc you could go one better and get the bluetooth version but you wanted wired :/

the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 4.0 is one of the best wired mice available - i dont rate the logitech ones at all in comparison after using them all. + MS are excellent with RMAs/tech support, they will send you a new mouse free if you have a fault that they cant fix over email - no messing about with repairs etc

    go get one
