Which mobo + cpu?

Looked back a few pages on the forums and couldn't see a recent thread so here goes and sorry if everybodies sick of answering the same type of questions :mrgreen:

Currently have a P4 3.2 NW which runs fine at 3.4, Asus P4P800-E-Dlx mobo with a 6800le AGP graphics card, 1Gb of Twinmos DDR400 RAM and I think it may be time for an upgrade.

Not planning on using much from the old PC except the 2 DVD writers and the 2 SATA Seagate HDDs so am looking for recommendations on which mobo + CPU to go for. I've been looking and reading about the Asus P5B and the E6300/E6400 so am wondering if I'm far off the mark in terms of these comps. Any advice would be welcome.

You know I knew I forgot something, looking to spend around 200 notes on the mobo and CPU ideally.

E6300 plus a compatible mobo, then overclock? thats what im doing

If you wait a while it'll get you more than you'll get atm - Intel are planning price cuts, e6420 is an e6400 with e6600 levels of cache and e6300 pricing afaik.

That with a half decent motherboard will give you a 3ghz machine for under 200 - so Marcvs, you're wrong :P

Yup, I'd go the ASRock route with a C2D for the budget.

Yep, I have some DDR2 RAM lying around, also a PCI-E graphics card to tide me over. Looking at the MSI P965 Platinum, that sort of fits the bill in terms of features that my current board has in terms of firewire, etc.... Anybody have any comments on this board?

I can certainly wait a week or 2 for the new CPUs to arrive but will do a lot of reading in the meantime. :)

I personally would go for an e6400 and that GigaByte Mobo as it seems pretty decent

i've got the more expensive option of that gigabyte DS3, not sure what the difference is though :/

its a pretty decent mobo, not that i know what makes a mobo decent ^^
