    3.06GHz P4 temps

    Hi there ...

I have just built a P4 system, 3.06Ghz on Asus P4G8X, 4 case fans inside a coolermaster alu case. The Asus probe says the CPU temp is 81 c idle ... I feel like the chip's gonna burn itself out soon ..

I am using a stock intel HSF & prep'ed the heatsink as per artic silver instructions.

    Is 81 c to high ?? I think it is ...

Please share your temps .... if it is too high I may have to check my HSF installation ... to make sure I haven't done anything wrong.

    Thanks.

    Yes yes yes tooo high,

I've got a p4c 2.4Gig system running at 3gig here at 36°C idle at present, Try another sensor system maybe mbm5?

    http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

    or Sisoft Sandra?

    http://www.sisoftware.net/

Alternatively try and see if you burn your hand on the chip?...
Ideally anywhere between 30°C and mid 40's at idle is fine imo.

If you are still concerned try checking the thermal layer between your cpu and the hsf is okay.

yea that is well high imo. My chip runs hot all the time, averages about 40-50 degs, which is hot, but managable until i upgrade

Thanks ... I think I will switch off the computer now and check my HSF installation.

    Cheers.

Try TiG's suggestions, 81 seems very very hot, try touching the chip/heatsink as TiG said, that will let you know whether it really is that hot in which case you'll have to check the heatsink installation or whether it's just Asus probe when you can try some different software and prehaps update the BIOS.

    Thumbs up

    Thanks all.

I haven't try that other piece of software yet, and me being a newbie and all, rushed off to take the HSF off ... no burn marks .. Phew. But then, either the chip cooled really quickly or that Asus Probe was having me on.

Anyhow, I am faced with another problem now. Before I put the heatsink back on, I need to clean and prep the Heatsink base & the integrated heat spreader on the chip, do I not? With what material do I do the cleansing with? Not water I hope

Any suggestions ? The Akasa TIM-clean CPU & Heatsink Cleaner looks like the staff.

Many thanks for all your suggestions again.

should just be able to scrape / wipe most of the Arctic Silver off with a cloth, then just use a bit of nail varnish remover to rub over the cpu core and heatsink base

Dont laugh.......wipe off arctic with kitchen roll, wash the heatsink under a tap with red hot water and detergent, use a toothbrush on the base (its not too aggressive) and then rinse in hot hot water, then blow dry with a hairdryer.....

then while its hot.....GIN ! Or VODKA! Clear spirit.....

and always use NON LINT tissues, no bog roll cos it leaves little bits all over.....kitchen roll is OK!

Then prcatice putting Arctic Paste onto the core, you want it micron thin, so that the high points are making contact with bare metal( where its squished the paste) but the micro ridges have silver paste in and are spreading the surface area wide.

Practice......blob of paste onto CPU, then with very clean hands, spread with finger tip......then push heatsink down, secure and then remove straight away......and look at it.....

both at the CPU and the heatsink.

Too much? Then clean it off just the heat sink and try again...take it off.....and keep at it until you know just how many of these processes it takes to get it right....

and dont forget.....the heatsink should be hot ....cos if its cold it aint taking the heat away from the chip. It should be the same temp as the chip itself then YOU did your job right

if I really wanted to be picky I'd say don't spread with your finger,as they contain natural oils etc, which could therotically contaminate the paste.

Old credit card not a bad option (or a new one if its the girlfriends/wifes - It's better in the long run!)

agreed, but once they have been washed in washing upliquid the oldfingers does a great job and its sensitive too.

doesn't artic silver contain some nasty chemicals that you don't really want on your skin? or at least not ingest. i'd wash them thoroughly afterwards if you do use them.

    Talking

Thanks all ... will keep you all posted on my progress.

Zak, I have followed the instructions at arctic silver.com .... prep'ed the heatsink base and everything ... then spreaded the arctic silver stuff onto the integrated heat spreader with an old credit card. It really was only paper thin. At no point did I use me finger ... when I did it was thru a plastic bag.

Maybe I did do everything right and asus probe was reporting temps 50 c above what it should be

Yes, arctic silver is nasty stuff ... when it's on you.
