As far as I'm aware Linux cannot play DRM-protected HD content.

While there are inferior alternatives, the likes of Photoshop can only be used in virtual machines, again as far as I know. That's a major problem for those with (extremely expensive) licenses for those products.

Who would want DRM-protected content?.. DRM is like signing a contract you don't know what it says. Unfortunatly people these days just lay down and take it up the arse, instead of standing up for their rights.

Why would you want to use Photoshop when you have the GIMP?.. The point of Linux development isn't trying to emulate windows, it's to provide tools to do a job. And if you truely must use Photoshop, what's wrong with VMware (or Q-Emu if you want a freebie) anyway?

So when HD-DVD and/or Bluray take over from DVD as they inevitably will, how are intending to watch that content?

Who said anything about emulation? Photoshop is superior to GIMP, and yes I have used both - quiet extensively at one point. That's fair enough about running in a VM though - though of course you'll need a(nother) license to do so.

If nobody buys DRM hardware or content, the record industry will need to stop shafting people out of pure economics. But of course everyone will anyway because they're plebs, which is why Tony Blair got elected 3 times in a row.

Not for Q-Emu, and there's always the off-chance that it'll work with Wine at some point.

I meant for the OS that you run on it...

Anyway, as I've already said, we've drifted too far. This will be my last post on the subject.

    Wine doesn't need machine/OS emulation.

Wishful thinking though - whether we like it or not the record/movie industry aren't just going to abandon DRM. So we can either adapt and make the most of it (which isn't that much of a hardship , thus why most people are happy to accept it), or sit in defiance and not get to see or hear new content.

And I for one want to watch nice HD content on my nice HDTV!

On the drivers side of things, getting them to work in xp, and I assume vista when it is released for supported devices is easy, go to the website download the driver click net a few times and it'll work. Sure occasionally you will get conflicts, but thats better than in linux where for periods of time some hardware just wont be supported unless you know a hell of a lot about the distro and changing the drivers from one distro to another. There are also a few linux distros that just won't install on my pc [ubunto and mandrake derivatives] a problem I have not had with xp.

If *nobody* purchased DRM products out of concern for their rights, the records industry would have to change or go broke. Like I said, people will let themselves get shafted so everyone who knows their being liberally raped will have no choice but to follow suit.

That's not a Linux problem that's a problem with the hardware industry not writting linux drivers or releasing the device specs to the FOSS community to write their own.

with regards to XP all my computers use oem licences which I continue
to use even after major hardware changes.

Even phoning up MS themselves they reactivate oem versions
    after major hardware changes.

Also it is debatable whether the EULA stating that you cant
transfer OEM versions is valid in the EU.

As far as the EULA is concerned, I thought that Microsoft rewrote the agreement to allow for Vista to be installed on only one machine at any one time but could be installed on another once it had been removed from the previous machine? (not sure if my english is clear enough there...).
