New build - please check specs

Guys, I have been out of the game for quite a while now as I have being using a Mac.

A mate has asked me to build him a decent machine for around a grand, he has a monitor already.

OS what's happened in the PC hardward market over the last year. Can you give me a few points as to what I should be looking out to get?

The Core 2 Duo E6600 is the 'sweet spot' CPU at the moment, DDR2 is no longer as finicky about timings as DDR1 was, ATi have the best reasonably priced GPU (x1950pro/XT), and 550W PSUs are still overkill.

    P5B deluxe wifi

    E6600

Nice big scythe cooler maybe, although for a grand, you can do good watercooling.

2gb pc2-6400 ram and upwards, 8500 if he fancies some hefty overclocking

    Corsair 620w psu.

Just the graphics and sound left....whats he want to do with it all?

If your mate isn't the type to build a computer himself then I'd advise sticking to retail heatsinks so as to keep the warranty intact.

Using a better cooler doesn't void your warranty.

I don't have a core2duo personally, so maybe it's different, but changing an AMD64 cooler for a better one *does* void it's warranty, as does replacing the thermal grease (with one exception apparently).

Could I painfully suggest that IF there was any old DDR ram about, to save you some dough, that an A64 is still a blinding machine

    Nforce 4 Mobo's from about £60
    CPU's from the same
    2 old sticks of 512DDR PC2700 or 3200 (A64's dont care)

    Just a thought

Core 2 Duo is better....no doubt. But everyone I've built an A64 for has been suprised and smiley

The chap wants it to last a couple of years so it kinda makes sense to build with the latest technology

Looks good, but a few changes if it was me.

234 quid for the xtx is a lot for a card that is a generation behind. Im sure I saw an 8800GTS for only a few quid more on the bargain forum.

The motherboard is a pig. Honestly, check out the P5B deluxe wifi, it is rock solid and overclocks great (the saving on that has paid for the 8800gts)

I would also change the hiper.
