    Lightbulb Game controller idea

I've had an idea for a mouse and.... see what you think.

Imagine a mouse but with a small trackball where the wheel button now is. The trackball would also function as a button, and very light to move.

An Fps game would play as normal but your index finger on the track ball would aim your weapon while your running left, right...

    Would that over complicate controls?

Why not have the middle finger on the track ball, and then index and ring to use mouse buttons left and right?

I can feel the rsi pain already

nice idea though ... I don't know why somebody doesn't just invent optical tracking - e.g. in a FPS having the weapon aiming mapped to your actual/physical FOV in relation to the screen ... might only need a simple operation to your eyes to insert the sensor - pain in the ar$e when upgrading though :/

better would be to have a touch sensor pad, like in a laptop, but integrated into the left mouse button, that way it would prevent too much RSI, and would kick arse, as you could aim around the screen by moving your finger around the button, and a simple press would fire.

It is however pointless, as moving the mouse is a far more effective way of changing target, and having two different controls for where the crosshair is, is just too unintuitive... but you never know

I watched tomorrows world once, and they had this sphere that you ran inside to direct your character - they had doom projected onto the sphere's inside and it responded to your movements. Now I think THAT'S a cool (and expensive) controller.

Ive played with a headset that acted kinda like a joystick as you moved your head around ... great fun although mice are much easyer to control, lol!

IIRC IBM released a mouse with a touchpoint instead of a wheel about 7 years ago - didn't take off. (hate touchpoints anyway - always end up plugging a mouse into my laptop instead)

Part of the problem is that moving your middle finger sideways is not exactly intuitive.

I want a pov hat under the thumb on my mouse...
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

Operation Flashpoint already works like that, but you have to press a button, and then you get free movement with your head to look around.

I remember playing Tachyon: The Fringe all the way through and completing it, using nothing other than a tilt control joypad. I must have looked so insane while I was playing it....
