    Upgrading PC

    Decisions, decisions

Am planning on doing an upgrade in the new year, got some money coming.

Current PC specs are up to date at the side there <---

    Now do I:

    A) Upgrade to Sk939 dual core (opty 170) + New mobo (??) and PSU (Seasonic 600W)?

    or

    B) Change to e6600*, Abit AB9 Pro, 2Gb PC6400, Seasonic 600W PSU, Arctic Cooler 7?

One way is a bit more expensive than the other, but I suppose I could sell my existing RAM/CPU/Mobo on for a few quid.

    SLi/Xfire not a priority.

    * Am I better off saving a few more quid and getting a e6300 and just boosting performance with overclocking? I do *some* video converting but its not my priority...gaming is!

Currently have an Antec Neo 480W PSU which will probably do the business both ways...but????

    Decisions, decisions

i just had the same predicament as you, except i wanted a sff rather than a full size computer. In the end i went for a X2 5000+ AM2, rather than the C2D which i would have preferred - this was because i couldn't find the right shuttle for me that took the C2D. Had i had the choice, i would have defo gone for the Intel precessor, they beat AMDs hands down at the moment.

I wouldn't go for a 939 if i were you, especially a new mobo, i think that would be limiting your udgradability as they are being phased out at the moment, hence my choice to upgrade.

Yup, wait for the e6420 - will be the price of the e6300 with the cache of a e6600 and the (default) clockspeed of a e6400. Best bet all round.

The other benefit of waiting is you should see the release of newer motherboards as C2D becomes a more established choice, giving you a greater range to choose from, and hopefully a corresponding decrease in price.

The other thing - PSU wise the NeoHE is manufactured by Seasonic, so is a good PSU, only real upgrade would be to a S12/M12 500-600w

Just out of interest, how much difference does having a bigger cache actually make to the speed of the CPU? Is it discernable or is it just one of those "bigger number therefore better" things?

Depends on application really, but can have a (limited) benefit for gaming/video work

If I'm honest, the only reason I suggested waiting is for the price fall - you'll be getting better value for money = happier consumer.

When are the prices coming down? If its longer than 2 months I think I'll just do option B but with a e6300. I can get one of the 4Mb cache ones later maybe (e6420).

    Merry Christmas

Does the E6600 from your option B not have 4MB cache already?

Yeah, but the e6420 will have 4Mb cache and be priced around the same as e6300 when it arrives.

Might just same some cash and get an e6300 and o/c the beast. Can always upgrade later then to faster cpu/quad core whatever.

Have been out today and bought the following

    Core2Duo e6400
    Abit AB9 Pro
    2Gb OCZ PC26400 4-4-4-15
    Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro

Have spent ages doing some last second benchies on current set up, so I can compare against the new stuff.

I now have to learn the arcane art of core2 o/c

Any advice on the differences (If any) from doing o/c on sk939?
