sat down stairs i have a 859MB (that is a m) drive made by wester digital. you would have needed a tower BLOCK full of these to make 1tb (1165 if im correct)

Compair this to the $399 list, discounted to £329 for the Seagate 750gig drive on BestBuy. So i think we can quite safely assume that the 750gig and 500gig drives are going to shift down in price quite a bit.
At this moment in time I would estimate that these drives should debut at around £300, will be a premium for them at the moment as they are the highest capacity drives around.
Nice if you can afford it mind, wouldn't mind 3 in a Raid 5 setup but I don't have £900 to blow on it.

I think £300 would be a fair price. Assuming that is inc VAT that gives us 30.00p/gig, this compaires to 28.93p/gig for the current 750gig drive from Seagate.
However, the 500gig Seagate is £15 less than the 500gig Hitachi, so there may be a further price premium.
This is of course just idle speculation
(all prices are based on the Scan price list)

A Valid point, I've never used Hitachi Deskstar drives, what's their reliability history like?
You can always add more, well that is of course if you have spare ports & room inside your rig that is.Just bought 2x500gb drives. Gutted.
I d rather have two 500gig ones. Less painfull failures. The bigger the drives become, the higher the need for additional drivers to backup becomes.
I'll really show my age here.....one of my first jobs was fixing 20Mb hard drives which were almost the size of a washing machine! They has a whopping great motor in them with a pulley and drive belt to the platter assembly - used to switch them on and then leave them for 10 minutes for the speed to stabiliseTry telling the kids of today that and they won't believe you! Also worked on 8 inch floppy drives that held 100k!
then buy two and have the second and an external backup drive.
Just bought a 500gb Lacie external drive for £110 from Dabs! Unfortunately the best value is to buy 4 x 250Gb drives... Was looking at the LaCie 2Tb Bigger Disk... mmmm.
Perhaps I just have too much data... Couldn't imagine losing 2TB of data! Try backing that up on DVD.
