Chassis & PSU? - Lost for choice.

Hi there,

I Have recently just upgraded my system, as a result the OCZ 420Watt PSU is no longer enough Juice for my rig:

• Intel E6600
• Asus p5b delux
• GeiL 2gig cas4 800MHz
• BFG 8800 GTX
• 2 Sata HDD's
• 2 Optical Drives
• Creative X-Fi Platinum (w/ front faceplate)

At first I think I was looking at around the 700Watt marker, just to be safe and allow some future headroom - but I am unsure. I was also thinking of going modular, as the oibsesive/compulsive in me finds this idea quite attractive.

On top of that, I currently house my rig in a Coolermaster 201B (Black widow). Whilst the new rig fits inside it, there is little room for much else! I think the case-fans have seen better days (the noises they make are disturbing!)

So aha! Upgrade time! But what to choose?


For PSU, I am unsure, though I have been looking at some silverstone products with interest. Namly the modular 750watt variant of their supplies. Is this good? Is there a better bang for my buck?

I have also been totally lost for chassis, at the moment I think I am looking at two:

• Silverstone Temjin TJ-09 chassis
• Cooler Master Stacker 830

Does anyone have recomendations for these cases? Is there a better alternative? Is the silverstone worth the extra cash?

If anyone could shed some light on these questions I would be eternally greatful

Forgot to ask, does anyone who has these cases know of it's acoustic properties?

Are they big ass loud monsters? This could be a selling point for me.

If you are looking for a low noise case I'd highly recommend an Antec P180... as for PSU's I'm a bit of an Enermax fanboy, but I have a softspot for Seasonic units too.

I've Heard the 8800GTX's wont fit in those...

Looks fine if you remove the upper chamber HDD rack and keep all your hard disks in the lower chamber (has space for 4 drives).

I use a Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum. Would this fit okay behind that door?

Yes though, the 8800GTX fits fine in a P180 provided you make the aforementioned changes.

for the psu id recomend the M-12, its the modular version of the S-12 which ive got (seasonic 600w) I did a bit of reasearch and it came out top in a few reviews I read, and im using it to power an E6600, a creative x-fi, a radeon X1800, and ive got 2 HD's

Yeah, I opted for a 750W Silverstone ST75F (modular). Basically ticked all the boxes: Modular, High Watt, Efficient (80%), Will fit in case!

With the TJ-09, the PSU will be visable, so I kinda like the black matt finish. Not to mention the 120mm fan for it being quiet. It seamed like a fair price for the features/power as well.

I wish I had that sort of money! It looks a very nice case although I haven't really read much on the technical side of things.

Of course, Google is great but you can't always trust what you find on the www. I'd prefer to ask questions on Hexus and feel that the lovely folk will answer questions in a much more accurate way. So feel free to ask questions here!

I would recommend a Tagan easy connect. I ve been using the 480 about 1 year now on my always on system with no complains and it's fairly silent.
