    PSU Pondering...

    Hi folks,

Can someone give me an opinion on the ASrock LiveSataII G-Lan mobo please?

Also, I'm after a good, general purpose Modular PSU for around 60 squid - any recommendations?

    Thanks as always,

    Nimb.

A bit over the budget but it's worth it.

Looks sweet enough and I know Corsair have a fine rep for memory. Are they recent entries into the PSU business?

    Many thanks for your tip,

corsair PSU's are rebranded Seasonics, which are very reliable.

    Good luck

true, i've been running an enermax pretty much constantly for nearly 2 years - it's very quiet and was really good value. Plus I got a free enermax lanyard with it, which is some serious geek-chic

    QFT!

The Corsairs are manufactured by seasonic, an awesome make in their own right. Although Enermax's are perfectly reasonable PSUs they aren't in the same league as Seasonic/FSP/OCZ.

Well, in the end I bought a Type-R Hiper 580 watter from Overclockers and I can't tell you how impressed I am with the whole modularisation thing! It's made in-case life soooo much easier!

    Huzzah!

You are going to need it!
TYhe Hipers are average to say the least.
If you have any problems then OCUK are notorious for being rubbish with RMA

I live close to OCUK and they've been fine when I've taken stuff back in person.

Between the Hiper and Corsair, reviews were fairly balanced and so I went with the one recommended by friends who work in a computer store and who have tested many CPUs.

The selection of cables and possible cabling configurations is superb, the PSU has a decent bottom mounted fan and is as quiet as anything - in fact my hard-drive makes much more noise than it.

It's a real minefield this PC peripherals lark anyway, I've never had much faith in ASrock mobos (and I don't seem to be alone) but our Cybercafe PCs have been running quite happily with them in for 10 hours a day for the last four years... one forum will say this, another mag will tell you something totally different...

I liked what I read about the PSU I bought, people I know reckoned they were good and if I get a couple of years out of it I won't be complaining

    You are joking right??????
That sounds like an OCUK statement...Its wasnt one of them that told you was it?

The Hiper isnt anywhere near as good as the Corsair.
Hipers are mid-low end units at best and should NEVER be recommended for SLi....The 12V rails just arent stable enough.

Overall this power supply unit performed very well. The rails were very strong and rather high, but not high enough to cause any worry. When put under load, the fluctuation on the rails was minimal. The fluctuation was .05V on the 12V rail, .02V on the 3.3V line, and .01V on the 5V rail. This translates to 0.4% fluctuation on the 12V rail, 0.5% on the 3.3V rail, and 0.2% on the 5V rail. Even though this unit was powering a water cooling system, two 6800GT's, and an overclocked Athlon 64, the rails still barely fluctuated. Since rail stability is often very important for system stability, this unit should do very well in any system. The SLI certification is well deserved, and we would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a good looking, yet high performance power supply. Ignoring the performance what had impressed us most, however, was the new innovative modular connectors for the Hiper's Type-R PSU and we hope they can continue in this great tradition.

If this kind of review has it waaay off then how can anybody expect someone who's new to the whole hardware game to make a fair decision when purchasing?

I won't be overclocking my system or even running dual video cards either so, as mentioned, if I can get 2 years regular use out of it I'll be happy
