buying some pc3200 but not sure.

what brand 400ddr ram should i go for? is crucial the best, or cheap ram ok? samsung? twinmos?

also, whats all this 2.5 3 latency thing about. does it increase speed etc?

also, is one stick of 512 better than 2 x 256??

First, what board do you have? If it allows dual channel (nforce2, or kt600 chipsets) then get 2x256mb. Run it in slots 2 and 3. On my NF7-S there is a capacitor in between slots 2 - 3 (they are furthest from the CPU.) Dual channel gives about 5% performance boost to the system.

Pretty much any branded RAM is good, as long as it is run at stock speeds. I got some Generic pc2700 and it wont run at stock at CAS 2! stir clear!!

The timings depend how fast the RAM processes data etc. the most common thing people do is to put it the RAM at CAS2, this is the tightest setting. You can vary Tras, Ras, and some other things, but they get confusing.

As i said before any branded RAM is good. Depending on the price, crucial, samsung and twinmoss can all be got cheaply. Or if you want to spend more, for something that already comes at fast timings get something like corsair, or OCZ. However there is a huge price difference.

i have an adit nf7-s v2 board. a xp2500 barton is coming. do you change the cas in the bios so any ram can be run at cas 2? how do you do it? is it safe?

all this stuff is new to me since joining these type of forums, and it staggers me what you can push your stuff to safely. this ram stuff really confuses me.

hehe, i have an NF7-S too. There arent too many functions for the RAM.

I have 2x256mb pc2700 sammy in dual. this is at 12x166[fsb]. (2ghz for the system.)

For reference i have the timings at 6-3-3-2.0 im not sure what they all are, but the last in the CAS.

To change the RAM settings you wil have to go into the BIOS. You will not have to change the voltage, and it is perfectly safe. The RAM will be should be fine at CAS 2.0 @ stock speeds, unless it is really bad i.e. rated at 3.0CAS as standard (2.5 will be fine.) Also as i said before, generic RAM will be crap.

In Nforce2 boards it is said that best performance comes from having the divider at 6/6. Normally it is at 3/3, to change this go into the first tab on in the BIOS (CPU settings or something i think it iscalled.) and it should have fsb:RAM somewhere, below the fsb i believe. Change it to 6/6.

Also the lower, or tighter you can get the timings the better, it is also thought that for nforce 2 it is best to have the timings at 11-*-*-2.0 where * = as low as you can go.

i went onto crucial website and they rate it at cas 3 on a majority of there ram, so i could in theory just change it to 2.5 and it will improve it? if it aint much i may end up leaving it to be honest.

i just want the best and cheapest ram. was going to go ebuyer value but the reviews are slating it.

they will run cas 2 up to about 220 - 225mhs fsb with around 2.9v

Don't know your board other than it uses a KT266 or 266A chipset depending on revision.
If your BIOS allows it & your XP2600+ is unlocked change the multiplier. It is either that or up the FSB if your board & memory can take it.
