    Asus SLI Premium Upgrade Path

    Hi all,

Ive been out the game so to speak for a while but now feel the need to upgrade my processor to a dual core as this best matches my pc usuage (video encoding, high end gaming and media streaming). I dont really want to spend to much but dont know what I should be buying ? Do I change the lot and go for a Intel Duo or can I get away replacing just the processor if so which one ?

    Cheers in advance

I think the best option for you is to get one of these:

you have to be pretty fast , because Amd don't make those any more .

WIll I notice a speed drop from my 2.8 or will the dual core make up for that ?

Unless you can justify getting a new base (mobo, CPU and RAM) then just get the Athlon dual core. It's bordering on necessary with video editing. The Core 2 Duo is quite a bit faster at encoding, but whether it's fast enough to justify the extra price is up to you.

Yes, there'd be a speed loss in going to that X2 4600, as it's simply a slower clock speed - if you could boost it up to 2.6-2.8 then you'd be unlikely to notice anything drop at all - it's arguable whether you'd notice one anyway.

If you can afford to go the C2D route, then do it

Saves throwing money at old tech if you think your going to want to upgrade again any time soon.

I'd either get a second hand dual-core (I still think that my OC-ed Opty 165 will still be fine for another 12-18 months though I wouldn't buy one new at this stage) or jump to C2D.
