The best time to upgrade my computer?

Hey guys, I have been having much thought lately whether I should be upgrading by summer this year or not. Come to think of it, new Vista OS, Dual Core, Dx10 card and such. I did a bit of research regarding quad core CPU's and DDR3 RAM and am quite wary if these technologies will be released by the end of the year.

Or should I wait for 2008 to come and upgrade then? Since I play loads of games, Upcoming games using the unreal 3 engine, crysis, and such. Or should I just stick with this system that I have and wait.

the problem with computers is that your system will be old in a couple of months all the time...

alot of new stuff is coming out yes, but perhaps if u say 'ill wait till DDR3 is out' then 12 months later new ram will eb out, so its a lose lose situatino to be honest.

quad core CPU's will be better if you liek to run media player, play games, do a virus scan, have word open etc at the same time, but for games imo its a waste of time...

quote me if im wrong but nothing really fully uses 2 cores at this moment in time let alone 4.

core2duo is out now and is a cracking CPU to have, and with grpaghics card going DX10, (8800 Nvidia is dx10) and ATi brining out thier piece of the pie soon,it really depends on your budget now and what your going to use it for. also worth noting you need vista for DX10



your PC is not exactly top spec but its not dog slow either, you could always upgrade your graphics card to boost perfomance in gaming for now and when you think the time is ready go for it. i mean you could always upgrade components at a later date and sell... albeit at a lower price

I'm waiting for ATI to release their graphics card, so the 8800's will drop in price. I'm guessing this will happen in under a months time?

nVidia are due to release the 8600 gfx cards in about a month. These will probably perform on a par with the 7900 series at less cost and offer full DX10 support. Vista's due out later this month and no doubt will have several initial issues.

Unless the money's burning a hole in your pocket, I'd wait for another couple of months to see how things pan out.

if you constantly wait you will never get anything. pc stuff comes out all the time but to be honest you probs arent missing much aslong as if you upgrade you get a decent overclocking mobo, core 2 and a dx10 gpu your be fine for a few years

I've said this before...Ask yourself "Can i do what I want/need to do on this pc"

If the answer is yes, then wait, if not, upgrade

Anandtech have a good article on what Intel are doing with the Core 2 Duo in the short term. Basically they'll be tweaking core speed, L2 cache size and latency, and FSB, to spread out their processor offerings: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...oc.aspx?i=2903 (think this linky works)

I'd say your system will last out the year unless you get impatient. The 8800 line is already starting to drop in price - Scan have the Palit 8800GTS for £244.26 inc VAT this weekend. That's the lowest I've seen an 8800GTS (but I haven't looked that hard)
