Macbook 2.0ghz vs Current PC?

I'm thinking of selling my PC to a friend and switching to Mac. I know the software side of things will be great for me, I just need to know what the speed difference will be like.

How will a 2.0ghz Core2Duo Macbook with 2gb of RAM compare to my current X2 3800+ + 2gb DDR400 rig?

I know it's a laptop so the HDD Will be slower but how does the CPU and RAM compare?

I've got a 4400+ X2 and one of the new 17" mac book pros. The Mac 'feels' faster, but then I'm comparing OSX with Windows.

Depends on what you're doing with it really I guess.

Game at all? Macbooks only have Intel GMA 950 graphics so if you switch you won't be able to play many PC games.

A macbook is next to useless for gaming! but id say that the macbook would be faster overall doing day to day tasks, but id mainly put that down to OSX rather than hardware tbh.

The MacBook Pro fixes that, but at a price. Comes with an x1600 iirc

The CPU will be substantially faster. The slower HD will have a bigger effect on day-to-day tasks, but it's difficult to compare the overall feeling of speed between different OSs.

Ok thanks, I'm not a PC-gamer anymore so that's not really an issue. I guess if I can flog my desktop I'll switch

If you are not gaming i would highly recommend you switch. If you require a Windows based app, then you can always install XP on a partition.

Some apps such as Office 2004 for the mac are not written for Intel macs yet, so they run slow in "Rosetta". Office 2008 is not due on the mac until July this year. Dont worry about Hard Drive speed, Mac osx is a hell of a lot faster.

And i'm not a Mac fan boy by the way (even if i do own one) i'm actually a Windows fan. Especially Vista, it does look cracking and a hell of a lot better than OSX 10.4.

Bottom line, if you're not gaming buy a mac, if you are buy a PC.

I'm a gamer and i made the mistake thinking i could buy a high end mac and play flight sim x. It plays Battlefield 2142 and CSS fine. But reality is, the mac gpu (see sig) cant hack Fsim X. So i'm having to sell my machine to be replaced by a macbook pro and build a pc again.

Why would anyone use MS Office? NeoOffice is based on OpenOffice, but runs without X and it's free.

I've got almost the exact same rig as the op and i am also thinking of a move to a apple laptop. I dont game but i do edit and render the occasional video/dvd.

Am i right in thinking a 2.0ghz with 2gb ram macbook will be faster than my current x2 3800+ at rendering and burning?

Also do people think the extra premium to buy a 15" mac book pro is worth it? i'm trying to choose between a macbook with an extra tft screen for dual screen editing, or just a macbook pro.

just upgrade the GPU on your mac pro - I hear 8800's OR X1950XT's work really well ( I know someone who put an X1950XTX in and its plays really well)
