reason i ask is i thought i'd be able to do loads more all at once.
example: playig football manager whilst burning a dvd rom. the FM hung and the disc drive was going bonkers.
is it because the same programs are on the same drive etc?
bit confused as it hasn't really staggered me except the cracking start up speed.
my mobo don't help probably either.
Sounds like you ran the machine out of RAM, which reading a DVD image is probably fair enough.
Almost certainly a silly question, but does Task Manager show 2 cpu graphs?
also, was the DVD image being buffered from the same hard drive as the game is on?
I cant imagine that the bottlenecking you've got would be caused by the c2d. Its more likely to be ram or your hdd.
FM can is multi-threaded too, so if it's told it can have both cores, then it takes both cores. There's an option in the preferences for that.
I must admit, I too have been not-impressed with the multi-tasking performance of my E6600. I expected Windows to always fly regardless of if something else is happening, and never to have to wait for something to happen.

How many hard drives and hard drive controllers do you people have?
The CPU isn't the only thing in a computer that's being used when you do tasks - on my X2 I find I can multitask great with no performance impact... just so long as my two tasks are using different resources.
Trying to play a game while burning a DVD though.. you're putting twice the load on the IO subsystem but if you've only got one hard disk for example then it's going to be jumping about and causing each task to wait it's turn.
Doesn't the X2 have the benefit of the HT bus though?Quote:

Shouldn't the fact that you are using 32bit and not 64bit have any impact?
the task manager does show 2 cores and it showed cpu usage during that period as 10% on both cores. the programs are on the same ide hdd but the images were from my sata drive(back up drive)
i just havent witnessed any major enhances over me old a64 3000 venice. but start up times are remarkable.
Try setting your PageFile on the faster SATA drive, it should help matters :)

i had one dvd going and the footy manager runs of daemon image to prevent dvd use.
