    Rant Rant Rant!!!

How come........... I have an old 500mb HD here that is still plodding on.... it must be about 5 years old! but my new 120gb Serial ATA Maxtor has managed to live 5 months!!! I also have an old Seagate 5400rpm 60gb drive. about 3 year old now and that is still plodding on.

So what the hell has happened to hard drives in the past 3 years? Why do they all die!!!!!!! They didn't used to.

Its because the manufacturers don't care as much about reliability in their ide/s-ata drives than they do about the price that they are at. And that is the same in the main part for the consumer; they expect the drive to be reliable, but they want it to be as cheap as chips aswell. And its not a very big problem if an ide drive fails, sure you lose your own personal data but its not the end of the world.

Whereas the manufacturers sacrifice the low price for reliability on their scsi drives, as their market is with servers that need to be reliable and on 24/7. The people buying these drives don't care about the price as much as us ata folk do, as they know that this is the industry standard for servers of their kind. And if data is lost on a server, theres a hell of a lot more problems that people face than if a single ide drive goes bust.

I know its annoying, and that us enthusiasts would pay a little extra for drives that last longer, but thats not where the manufacturers market is, its with the OEM manufacturers instead. And they prefer people ringing up ther £1/min helpline and paying 3x as much to buy a new drive from them, so its a 'like it or lump it' situation TBH.

because once u hit 120Gb u really start pushing the limits of the crappy HDD tech and the platters etc..

thats why id rather run 2x 60Gb.

FS - what is all this carp about HD's being noisy???

<rant>Raptors aren't that noisy, chances are that unless you've silenced your system the cpu/case fans are gonna be louder...

Try using a 200-800MB HD these days and compare the noise....</rant>

and yes I have 2 x Raptors in a Raid and I lub em... (early christmas pressie from my gf).

    Is that really the case?

I am about to buy a heap of new PC bits and was going to buy a Maxtor 160GB job for storage.
Should I go for another 2 80s instead?

My personal opinion is to buy WD drives, JB and PB drives come with a 3 year warranty, Raptors get a 5 year.

I only buy WD because of this (gives me some faith in the quality).

Environment tolerances become lower the higher the density a drive. Hence new drives are generally more likely to fail.

Also, drive failure is depedant on the quality of the packaging it was transported in too.
