I have never used a crossover cable before but I just got one from ebuyer to network 2 computers for a friend.
Now obviously a crossover cable should be able to network two computers directly form their NIC's.
But are they also suposed to work just like a normal patch cable ? As this one is ... I'm connect with it right now, from my comp to my switch

the wiring in them is different (or should be) try comparing it to a regular patch cable.

Yeah, basically they cut out the switch - by using "crossed over" wiring.

Some switches have an "Auto sensing" feature that crosses (or rather un-crosses) a cable if needs be.
This could be worth looking out for, if your switch has this capability or not.....
Failing that, if you really wanted to use the cable in a switch/hub you can get crossover box's that attach to the cable and cross it (or again un-cross as your case may be)
Ah ok. Must be autosensing then. Its a Netgear ADSL modem, router, switch all in one, DG814. A pretty nice piece of kit, so it probably has autosensing. It doesn't have a seperate uplink port as any of the 4 ports can be used to just plug another hub/switch into it, so they must be some pretty snazzy ports

Where do i start, drops connection every couple hours, wont take 4 latest firmware releases, the chipset it uses dosent like my ISP, crashes everday at some point, wont open ports even tough it says they are open, port 3 will only run at 10mb and finally.

Netgear are good at RMA's are they not? iirc all their products come with 3 years warranty...
Certainly the one Ive used had no such defects, in-fact, mate is currently using it. Its been running flawlessly for 7 weeks or so. The only problem hes had was when there was a power cut it went off, but you cant blame that on the router can you!

Sorry to heat that mate, hope you get something that works for you.
Its a shame becase when it works properly it is a nice pice of kit,but after the performance with this i will never trust netgear products again.
