    Sata Optical drive booting.

I planned on having an all sata rig for my next build but recently read that you cant boot from a sata optical drive.

I had never heard of this before and have assumed that you
    would be able to.

What I want to know most is can I use a sata optical drive to install windows XP (SP2 version) like I would with an IDE one.

Hmm...windows can be a problem to install, for me SP1 worked but SP2 didn't...still not sure why(nor care), possibly sata drivers?.

SP2 generally does not require you to press F6 and load SATA drivers at the beginning of the install - did not with 2 new ASUS (Commando and M2V) i recently bought.
