If you can't get your hands on Windows Server 2003 just use Linux.. that's what I'd suggest anyway. I guess it depends what you want to do with your server? If its just file sharing then it should be pretty simple using Samba?

I wouldn't be the guy to ask about Linux though.. I think directhex knows his stuff when it comes to Linux.

yeah, it's immensely hard. boot an install cd, install it, go into the 'shared folders' control panel bit, tick the Samba box when it asks, then add whatever you want to share

Directthex what Linux Distro would you recommend?

Will be wanting to use my box as an FTP/File server aswell as Hosting the Linux Teamspeak Software.

It will need SQL and Apache (want to use it as a server for website aswell)

Ive used Fedora before, but god i hated it. There are loads out there any ideas?

Also with Linux, how would i remotely manage it from Windows XP Pro? is that even possible?

Ok ill keep that distro in mind. Ive noted down VNC, command line control would take to long although a mixture of both would be good.

    Thanks.

what do you mean "how do i DL things from linux?"

linux is an operating system kernel - like ntoskrnl.exe

if you want to *use* it, you need a gnu/linux operating system, and an easy distribution thereof

ubuntu would be an example - www.ubuntu.com

    Ubuntu server download link:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUb...irect=download

It'll come as an ISO, which you can burn using Nero or something similar.

Alternatively go get a copy of Linux format. That will have at least one distro on it.

Pretty much every common distro will 'just work' now. I like Fedora Core, but only because I've used it most....

definitely get a desktop iso rather than server - the software's the same, but it's eqasier for an obvious beginner

What you are describing is not a server, but a NAS (Network Attached Storage), which will be perfect for when you just need more storage for flicks or music.

A real server is based around a server motherboard, runs a Server OS and can have various functions, but one thing a server is not supposed to be used as, is as a normal PC.
A server usually doesn't need it's own display, keyboard or mouse, as it will be remotely controlled.

About 2.5 years back I wanted to do something similar as you, but I also wanted the machine I wanted to build to be an Exchange-server, FTP-server, Web- server and File-server.

Being the geek I am :-) I went all out and build a system in a 19" rackmount-case installed in a 70" high 19" rack.
    Hardware for server:
    - Asus PSCH-L Motherboard with 64bit-PCI
    - Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz
    - 1 GB mem
    - 3Ware 9500S SATA Raid Controller
    - 1 Maxtor 160GB drive for OS
    - 1 Maxtor 160GB drive for OS-partition backup
    - 8 250Gb Maxtor HDDs attached to the 3Ware controller in RAID 5
    - Windows Server 2003 Standard
    - Exchange Server 2003
    - RhinoSoft Serv-U FTP-Server
    - Acronis True Image Enterprise
    - 3Com 24-port Layer 2 Switch 19"
    - Equip 24-port patchpanel 19"

Yes it did cost an arm and a leg... but you all know what happens once you start a project in a certain direction, in stead of stopping or buying cheaper stuff, you absolutely must finish it.
