    MoBo/RAM/CPU compatibility

    Hi,
I recently 'inherited' my brother's old gaming rig, which I am forced to use until I can scrape together the money for a C2D system
    (probably sometime in 2020 )

The mobo is an abit AN7, with an xp 2700+. I know the mobo supports DDR400 RAM, but does the CPU?
Should I get PC3200 or PC2700 modules? Or are the two things unrelated? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for that; in that case I think I'll be getting me some crucial ballistix PC3200 modules

The XP2700+ uses a 333mhz FSB so unless you plan on overclocking it then any RAM over PC2700 is going to be overkill.

I was thinking of (possibly) getting a 3200+ in t'future. I believe this has a 400mhz FSB... I think I may be stuck on socket A for a while.

There wont be any incompatibility issues with the pc3200 and the 2700+ will there?

I have already bought the RAM. What is it they say about fools rushing in?

The XP3200+ does indeed run on a 400mhz bus. When you use your new PC3200 with your current setup it'll just run the ram slower thats all, nothing to worry about

Be warned, there are a lot of fake xp3200+'s (rebadged/modded 2500+'s for example) around, if buying on ebay be careful, I'm fairly sure you can't buy them retail or oem from a shop anymore.
They are also quite expensive, high demand as people are wanting to max-out their older rigs.

Really? I didn’t realise that this was possible – can you mod a chip so that it reports itself as something else in the BIOS?

It is actually surprising how much these chips still go for- I suppose it’s people like myself trying to wring as much performance out of an older platform.

    If I can play HL2 with the 2700+, 1GB of RAM and a 7600GT I’ll be laughing…

I was looking to upgrade (via wonderful eBay) from an XP2400 to an XP3000/XP3200 and found it cheaper to my Athlon64s instead!

Gave up rooting for cheap bits in the end and built a C2D system instead - very happy with it!

That definitely seems to be the way forward, but poverty means that I'll be buying nothing new (apart from a GFX card) until proably September/after the summer holidays.

I can imagine the missus's face when I explain that I've sacked the holiday this year for a better computer

Hopefully autumn will usher in a new C2D era (unless AMD get their act together in the meantime...)

    *ahem*
I don't think I'll be getting passed for any credit soon.
I'd love to go mad on the 6 month interest free at Scan. 'Tis a dangerous thing, the buy now, pay later...

Out of curiosity how much did your XP3000+ go for dannyboy?

As ive got a 3000+ sitting in an old rig that my family use, i also have a 2700+ sitting in a box. I could switch them around and if you got a good price i could make some money.

If you didnt make much i wont bother.
