    Cpu or Mobo problems?

I built a computer for my sister about 8 months ago with a s754 sempron cpu and Asrock K8NF4G mobo. About a week and a half ago the computer just switched itself off and went dead. I thought power supply has gone but tested this by using the paperclip trick and it powers up ok. But to be on the safe side I took out the akasa 480w power supply out of the rig in my sig to test but still nothing no fans spin up or lights come on. So I thought must be mobo so sent that back for a replacement and tried 2 more boards since but exactly the same problem. I am now stumped! Excluding that 3 boards may be dead which is extremely unlikely I next thought is it the cpu that has died? Now to the questions:

1 I am testing outside of case and have just the 2 power supply leads, cpu, heatsink, fan and memory installed and am grounding the 2 pins on mobo power supply switch to turn on. This should be ok to test shouldn't it?

2 if cpu is dead will fans still power up?

I am at my wits end with this as my sister is giving me grief everyday.

    Please help

    Thanks

That does sound like mobo related problems..
Have you tried stripping it down to the basics?

EDIT- I see you have stripped it to the basic's. You tried only 1 stick of memory or different memory? If you have it could only be CPU related if the mobo has been replaced.

I had the problem but it was with one of my sticks or RAM. It could be gfx card? Do you get any beeps?

Strip it down some more so that you have only the following hooked up:

    motherboard
    CPU
    PSU
    speaker from case
    power switch from case

If you turn it on and get loads of beeps then all these components seem ok and it looks like your issue is with your RAM (the beeps mean that it can't find any ram) - this test has worked for me in the past.

Yes your fans will spin up even if CPU is dead (I had a dead CPU once)

Let us know how you get on...

When you removed the heatsink and CPU from the old motherboard what condition was the thermal compound between the two in?

It was the cpu that was dead. The first time this has ever happened to me and I have done so many repairs and builds. But it was strange that the system was completely dead with a dead cpu. No fans spinning even on psu tried with an asrock board and a gigabyte board also different makes of ram and 2 different power supplies. Glad it is sorted in the end. Unfortunately this was the only spare I couldn't test myself as hadn't another s754 cpu to test.

    Thanks
