4 DDR DIMMS on a Winchester core?

Hey guys,

Am I right in thinking that the S939 Winchester cores (somewhat old now) never liked 4 DDR DIMMS being used? Reason being I want to get another Gig of RAM, and already have 2x512MB (so it seems pretty pointless buying 2x1GB and selling 2x512MB)

It's not that they didn't support 4 DIMMs, but there was a problem with the memory controller on the Winchester core. If memory serves, you will either have to use CL3 and/or reduce your speed from 400 > 333MHz

I thought it was the Winchester/Venice introduction that improved the situation for extra memory? Anyway, I have used a Winchester 4200 in that 3GB configuration and it was rock solid and fine (Asus NForce430 based motherboard).

Perhaps you should buy the memory, plug it in and just see how it goes? Only if it sucked in something would I take the old sticks out.

Yes, IIRC you had to run at 333 instead of 400.

Never seems to make much difference on the A64 systems though.

Winchester have a "weak" memory controller so it is less likely to take 4 DIMMs at DDR400 speed. If you have a good core it MAY run at DDR400 or higher.

Most S939 boards can't run 4 DIMMs at 1T anyway. So 2T is not a particular Winchester issue.

As shaithis said, DDR333 is not really any slower (unless you are running something like 250~350HTT). The improvement simply from having 2GB of memory will make the impact of DDR333 and 2T negligible.
