Core2. the Pentium D's are dead and gone now, you may as well get a A64 X2 rather than a pentium D

There is no point at all in getting a Pentium D any more, unless of course you already have a socket 775 motherboard that doesn't support C2D.
The core 2 duo is a ferrari to pentium D's combine harvester.
It's also cooler and uses less power.
Yep, Core 2 Duo is the berries! Grab a copy of last months edition of PC Format(january) as well and it tells you how to overclock a e6300 to acheive e6700 type speeds. Bangs for bucks is amazing.
If you are on a real budget though, the D is half the price and not a bad overclocker in its own right!
The only thing I would say, is there is not much point in investing into dated technology.
If money is no option then go for a Core 2 Duo but if on a budget then go for a Pentium D or AMD X2 939

if you can afford 800 then think about that, but avoid 1066 if you are on a budget
rather get 2gb of 667 than 1 of 800 I reckon
C2D is the future....not Pent D
RAM wise - depends on what chip you buy. Something like the e4300 you can get away with 667, but if you get something like the e6300-e6600 you need to look at 800 maybe more if you are overclocking

Maybe i'm reading something different, but "custom PC" did a big test, and they seemed to think that memory differences were not as noticable with core 2 as it si with AMD.
Anyway, if it's budget RAM, check out Ebay, seriously. I've got 2 sticks of corsair ram (1GB, 667mhz) for £80.
They are great, and whilst they may not have the support you'd get from a main seller, they are still good value! Give it a try!
it's the old rule of thumb again, isn't it. Buy as fast and as powerful as you can afford at the time!
Forgot to ask, what components are you carrying accross from your old system, video card, monitor etc?
Well, they're different.
With DDR based AMD the memory latencies are important (timing), however the memory speed isn't so important.
But with core 2 duo, the memory speed does make a difference, though it's much less sensitive to latency.
Well longbow360 i'm carrying across my CD/DVD Drives, Monitor, 200GB Samsung SATAII, Microsoft wireless desktop, speakers and webcam and erm and thats about it, cause the rest is all out of date however might use my celeron for a bit to spread the cost, not sure yet tho.
cool cool, so you're looking at new MOBO, Ram, Cpu and Graphics card. Whats your budget all in, and what Mobo and GFX card are you considering?
To be honest im not sure on budget yet as i won't be doin owt for a couple of months, i just wanted to get some opinions, about what was good and what was bad.
As for current ideas either a Asus or Gigabyte mobo and some form of nvidia GPU, summet that supports vista anyway which i guess is most graphics cards now, o and possible SLI although im not a huge gamer, like my flight simulators though (yes i no you'll probably think thats sad)
Really as i said early and just tryin to gain opinions, and then from that wk my budget out (im a student u see so cash is tight!)
