    Unhappy Total available graphics memory

hi, i am runnign vista and one this i came across was that my graphic card has total of 383 MB which 128 MB Dedicated graphics memory and the remaining 255 MB is Shared system memory.

Now i am confused.. as i always though my graphic card has 128MB of memory only. Can someone explain to me why there is Dedicated and Shared?

Is it possible to get just Dedicated graphic card? whats the advantage of this?

Can i like say i want to change how the memory is distributed so that i have 255 MB dedicated and only 128 shared?

    Thanks alot

nvidia cards with "turbocache" and ati cards with "hypermemory" have a small amount of memory on the card itself, plus they can use up some of your computer's RAM as well

in this case, your card has 128mib onboard, plus it's using 255mib of your main system RAM

if you don't want to lose memory to this, then buy a real graphics card without a ram-sucking technology (you can buy a 7600-grade card for well under a hundred quid)

Slow. Lower Performance than dedicated DDR3 on a graphics card.

Think on an x1900 the RAM can run up to 1600mhz, your RAM runs slower, and is shared with the rest of the system.

Discrete graphics card are a lot better, be it a 7600/7900 or x1800/x1900, all of which can be picked up in one form or another relatively cheaply
