is it possible to overclock and still have a quiet pc?

looking at getting a p5b deluxe and a e4300 or 6300. Ram yet to be decided but will be 2x1gb(at least) and capable of overclocking well.

question is, without resorting to water cooling, is it possible to overclock the above fairly well but still have the pc as quiet as possible?

The E4300 is supposed to run cooler than a E6300.If you get a case with good airflow and 120mm fans and decent cooler the system should not be too noisy I suppose.However the level of noisiness can be a subjective thing and depends not only total noise output but also its pitch.

The answer is yes, you can, although you then need to think about degrees (in both senses).
The degree to which you want to overclock will, in all likelihood, affect the amount of heat needs to be dispersed and therefore the work of the fans (and therefore noise).
With the Core2Duo's, my opinion (without any personal experience but from reading) is that you could manage say a 25% overclock without any extra effort or noise, maybe a bit more. If you want to go for 100% overclock attempts, forget about quiet.

Stick to either Arctic Coolers or Zalmans for the CPU and you will be fine. Other people also swear by a few other makes too.

The answer is a definate yes.

Currently stressing my E4300 at 2.4Ghz (33% overclock) with an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro running at 40%, both cores at 46 degress maximum. Anything over 55 is when I will start getting worried.

Have been using both Arctic Cooler and Zalman coolers I have to disagree :( My CNPS-9500AT is relatively noisy at full speed, and Arctic cooler (Freezer 64 Pro) have quite poor cooling performance. Price-to-Performance ratio for Arctic cooler may be good but I don't think it is made for any massive overclock.

For more serious choice go for Scythe heatsinks, or go water.

You could also think, when do you need the quietness? If you are gaming you will probably don't care it is a bit noisy. If you only need quietness when working, then clock it down to stock or less.

Alternative solution, get a pair of sound isolation earphones :)

I must say my suggestion would be sycthe heatsinks and a big case. That way you can run 120mm fans at low RPM and still keep everything cool.

Other benefit is C2D is a hell of a lot cooler than some of the Pentium family...

I must say, my T7200 could match my Pentium D @ 3.5Ghz for Xvid encoding, but it only takes about 40W for the whole laptop compared to 150W by my Pentium D alone :)
T7200 @ 83'C with a ultra-tiny blower fan compared to PD920 @ 71'C with a Zalman 9500AT...

Yup, got a T2500 (2ghzx2) Core Duo (Yonah) and its faster than my Athlon desktop, only thing is it is limited by the laptop DVD drive and slower hard disk (7200rpm on its way when I get round to it)
