just got my p4 rig up and running

Ok guys lets see if you can help m8 out here i have just set up my p4 rig I wont to no haw i go about overcloking it
PC SPEC
MB IS Abit AI7 mainboard S478, SATA, µGuru
I865PE, ATX,Dual-DDR,Firewire ,Raid, LAN

CPU IS Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz (800FSB) with HT Technology - SL6Z5 Stepping - Retail

RAM IS TwinMOS 1GB (2x512MB) DDR PC3200 Dual Channel Kit

HD IS Maxtor Diamond 9 i think

gfx is gf4 mx 440 64mb <-------- i no i no

os windows xp sp1

Go into the bios (hit del at startup) and adjust the FSB. You may need to increase the voltage core for stability

Its a bit more involved than that on P4's steve, gotta look at the ratio your memory is running at aswell, not o/c'd a P4 meself so i can't be much more help but im sure someone will be along in a sec who can help more.

Ok - with good air cooling and no extra v you should get 225 mhz - 235 mhz out of the Twinmos ddr which means that on a 2.8C which runs at 200 x 14 by default you should be able to ramp up the FSB using the Abit soft mod menu in the bios to run at 225 mhz x 14 giving u a 3.15 G P4.

The ddr mem can be run at 3:2. 5:4 and 1:1 in the soft mod utility so at 225 mhz for the P4 u should be able to run the mem at 1:1 but if you want to push the fsb on the processor to 240 or above i.e. 240 x 14 = 3.36 G you will need to adjust the mem to 5:4 as it won’t boot on air at 1:1 without xtra volts i.e the P4 will run at 240 and the mem runs at 192 (192 x 5/4 = 240). You should manage all of this without increasing the voltage and if you've got cooling you might get more out of the P4 fsb but don't be surprised if you max out at 235 ish. Hope this is help to start off.

In the soft mod utility in the bios u should be able to adjust the CPU manually. It will run at 200 x 14 by default and if you change the DDR setting from SPD to 5:4 (which you've done) what is actually happening is that u r CPU is running at 2.8 G i.e. 200 x 14 and you mem is running at 160 mhz i.e. 160 x 5/4 = 200 - in other words you're under utilising the mem. I'm not surprised that 220 mhz was the most you could get out of the Twinmos - I hoped you might be lucky and get 225 to 235 but 220 is not unexpected.

In theory (but I'll be anmazed in practice if you get close without state change cooling) u should be able to manually adjust the CPU in the soft mod utility in the bios to 275 i.e. 275 x 14 giving u a 3.85 Ghz P4 and then run the DDR at a 5:4 seeting giving u 220 mhz for the Twinmos - Perfect world

I expect you will be able to push the CPU to 240 mhz at a maximum and still boot which means that you will have a 240 x 14 CPU = 3.36 Ghz and I would recommedn you run the DDR at a 5:4 setting i.e. 192 mhz to get optimum performance. I know 192 is lower than it will go but it won't take a 1:1 seeting i.e 240 without crashing.

U will get more witha bit of xtra V to the DDR but it's not my experience that the Twinmos improves much with xtra v and u will also get a a bit more out of the CPU witha bit of xtra v (perhaps up to 1.55) because in my experience the Abit's undervolt on th CPU.

If u don't want to use v u will need better quality ram which can perform at 1:1 with the processor or you'll need better cooling.

In my experience, no matter that many o-clockers say that they've got 275 x 14 out of the 2.8C chips I find that, on air, 240 x 14 is as good as it gets with most 2.8 C chips. The 2.4C and the 2.6C are better o-clockers relative to their rated speeds.
