    Low Power Full Speed Opterons

    How does this miracle of technology occur? How do they nominally shave off 34w from their cutting edge chips? Advanced processes? Alien technology? Campaign contributions and pirated "Talking Carebear" parts?

    Nope, they cherry pick. Yes, Opterons off the current production lines can run at "full speed" while consuming only 30w

    So some Opteron processors consume less power than others on the same wafer???

    How does this work or has The Inquirer got it wrong?

    surely that means less heat, so either greater overclocks or much quieter systems as you wont have a cpu belting out a huge amount of heat just got to wait until prices come down to something affordable for my budget (ie sub £100)

    Why are some of these CPU's able to operate whilst consuming half the amount of electiricty is my question!

    The manufacturing process doesn't produce exactly the same quality of chip every time. By pure random luck, some chips will be better than others. Perhaps the materials used were slightly purer? Perhaps the lines we slightly straighters?
