so yeah, plugging in a microphone into her mobo's mic-in, directly, doesnt work, the drivers for it are from realtek, and frankly, i don't know what the reason could be.
any suggestions?

It doesnt neccessarily have to have the speakers set up like that, but every nforce board since 2 has been surround sound if remember. Open up the sound app and see what the jacks are set to. The issue is that where only 3 sockets are present it will use the mic in for different things.
Actually, the realtek software has the mic-in set to... mic in, to the point that when a mic is plugged in, it asks what you just plugged in, even if you respond ; "mic-in" it still doesn't work

I had this same problem on my old motherboard, it was todo with the drivers, WinXP thought my sound chip was a slightly different version that what it really was and so everything worked apart from the mic. A simple driver update from the motherboard's site fixed the problem.
