Enabling printing on other computers in a network=NIGHTMARE!

hello,

Does anybody know how I can allow my laptop (connected wirelessly to a network router), to print on my Epson D88 which is connected via USB to my main computer (which in turn connects to the router via ethernet)?

If you can't understand my vague language, I'll try to upload a picture.

Can't you just use the Windows Printer sharing?

I had my Deskjet 930C successfully shared via that, and my network is slightly more complicated

I've used the simple windows printer sharing many times. The only issues I've come across were on a friends laptop with a software firewall (couldn't recognise a local network and blocked everything). Right click and away you go

I have my printers on my main PC shared out as above, no problems with them although I'm going to move the laserjet over onto a Axis box so that I can access it via IP soon.

Have you already bought the Axis box? If not, then it's probably worth considering something like http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=44PF. That'd do your laserjet and your Epson too, and supports LPR, which I seriously reckon is by far the easiest and best way to set devices like that up (though Axis print servers support that too). I've seen way too many servers overloaded with several different proprietary print server monitors, all of which appear to have been designed by a stupidia sufferer...

How can I use Windows Printer Sharing?

Install the printer on one computer. Right click on it in 'Printers and Faxes' as select 'Sharing...'. Fill in the details and you're away.

On the other computers, Click 'Add Printer' then select network printer and hopefully you'll be able to find it from there.

I've already got a couple of Axis boxes which my work were disposing of, just not got round to installing/configuring.

Dont know if this has been answered but set up an account with the same username and password on the desktop PC that you use to log into the laptop. Could be a permissions thing.

I've tried clicking on sharing on the control panel thing on the computer with the printer connected to it, but when I try to find it on my laptop, the list is empty, even when I tell it, it is on a network.

Have you checked your firewall settings mate, they can cause lots of trouble if the pcs within your network are not in a trusted zone?

I've tried disabling the firewall, and I managed to get the laptop to find it. Everything is perfect, except when it comes to printing it won't connect to the printer! In addition to this, the ink monitor thing remains greyed out (this indicates the Epson is switched off) in the print menu. Can anybody tell me how to configure the Norton software to allow the printer to connect to my Laptop?
