Do I really need a duel core CPU?

The only intense thing my new pc will do (when I eventually decide what I want) is playing games, I've heard duel cores dont relly play games much faster as the 'duel' aspect is not used for any games yet.

So is there any point?

I was thinking of going the Intel way, after spending the last 8 years having AMDs, just for a change really...

Basically, The fastest processor in todays retail market are intel's Core2Duo range, every single one of them will outpace any single core proc you can buy, so why NOT go dual core?

Depends what you are ugrading from....If I had say an over clocked opteron 165 with plenty of ram, I wouldn't upgrade for a year or so until quad cores are the norm and cheap, but dunno if the new DX10 cards will have AGP.

I've currently got a AMD 64 3200 (2Ghz)
With 1GB of 2700 RAM

and an AGP GFX - so I need the new Mobo too and the PCI-E card...

total new PC plz!!!

I'm guessing a core 2 intel + some DDR2 RAM and a PCI-E card will knock the s+it out of what I have at the mo?!

and T3hGr8£st has it spot on - the best processors on the market happen to be dual core, so this is more a question of "should i buy a cpu that sucks"

I've been looking at the quad chips, they are gonna be a long way off being cheap anytime soon.

I'll take it you guys know what your talking about and these duel jobs are a lot better than going single CPU.

Most current games do not seem to make the most of dual cores and can run very well on decent single core processors.However future games will probably take advantage of dual cores - an example will be the forthcoming games Alan Wake and UT2007!

The price of C2D's is very low and im sure it will drop even further.

Why purchase outdated technology when for a few extra and i mean a few you could have the latest?

Soon you will see more and more games enabling and using both cores. Already Supreme Commander utilizes both cores and it does make a real difference.

If you like overclocking the E4300 is a good bet.I have mine running at 3ghz(the E4300 natively runs at 1.8ghz!!).The E4400 will appear in Q2 2007 and maybe a better overclocker than the E4300. The E4300 currently costs around 110 quid in the UK and its prices will drop when the E4400 comes out.
