Are they really that noisey? its my next buy..
I have one of these, and it has quietened it down a lot, but it is still the loudest thing in my case.
Staffsmike, it depends on your case, some seem to deaden the noise, some seem to amplify it (mine does).
And what about the temperatures ?
I see there are no fans.
Are the drives heating up more then before ?
It's sitting at 37ÂșC which is pretty high but no where near enough to damage it.
I take it with your Lian-Li being aluminium then I could expect the same result if I installed in it my Lian-Li PC-V2100 case?
As I'd like twin raptors on RAID-0 in my up and coming new gaming rig, but I don't want the excessive noise that they make. Unless I can make them as quiet as twin WD3200YS RE 7200RPM drives on RAID-0 then I'm not gonna by them.
>Making a Performance PC, yet quiet pc can be a royal pain in the ass.
Anyway read that google article where they say high temperature enviroments (not talking 200C here or anything) has pretty much nothing to do with HD failure...
was on tomshardware..

there you go take tomshardware out of the equation
Have to agree with that. One of our IT rooms at work (which I refuse to work in) is a constantly high temperature, as the IT teacher refuses to open the windows. 20 PCs, a server, ISA server and cache box + all the hubs, and we're still waiting for a drive failure.
The Athlons in the PCs are at a constant 60c (don't even ask... just don't buy from Pars, ever) and any load for 15min+ (who'd have thought Mavis Beacon would take 100% of the CPU?) would be enough to push them over the stable load.
Still, 4 years later, and all the drives are good. Some are Maxtors too!
That said, high temperatures in northern England aren't exactly tropical...
I might get one of these sometime. I can hear my Seagate drive spin whenever the drive is accessed, and since windows dreamscene seems to constantly access it, I can always here it unless I have music over the top.
I have the NSK6000 case which comes with rubber pads to help cushion any noise from the vibrations, but it's still loud enough to annoy me.
Would this Scythe "Quiet Drive" make much difference when the rubber pads aren't silencing it?
Scan have them at last, excellent. I love these things, put a few in for mates. Work really well.
I can hear my Raptor through the floor when I am downstairs and it is being accessed :)
Still, it sounds good to me, in a geeky way.
(Silverstone TJ-05 transfers the sound/vibrations straight through the steel and plastic feet and into my wood floor)
Same here :D
Only time it annoyed me was when I was doing a full 24hr Le Mans race in November, and I was allocated the start and a return at 2am... Obviously coffee was my first port of call while my PC booted.. didn't realise just how loud they were while they were seeking.
That said, my case (Lian-li PC75) manages to do a magnificent job of dampening out the motor noise for such a chassis with quite a thin skin. It's not until I stick one of my spare Raptors in an IcyBox that I realise just how loud and intrusive the motor whir is. It's only the seeking I here from my case.
