Question Core 2 Duo - System Spec Advice Please.

    Hey all,

Just wondering what the best heatsink is for this chip? I plan to OC a E4300 but the chip will be in a HTPC style case (thats the plan.. possibly an Silverstone LC17 unless anyone got better suggestions for a well ventilated htpc case under £100). Im not sure if the case could fit a 120mm heatsink but if it can those are the type of heatsinks I am opting towards. Possibly full copper.

Suggestions and advice much appreciated! Thanks.
(Will update this post later when I need help with other parts! rather than hijacking someone elses thread).

Total budget I am aiming for prefarbly £600-800. So in reality really need help with anything to go with the E4300.

Hard drive wise I was also thinking either 2 x Samsung HD160JJ 160GB in RAID 0 (got good high throughput reviews) or 2 x WD WD1600YS 160GB SATA II RAID 0 (got 16mb cache each so should work speedy in theory) should still be relatively quiet though i reckon?

    Thanks.

EDIT: Need RAM and Motherboard suggestions now please. (My Mobo shortlist on page 2)

Very difficult to recommend a cooler for a HTPC due to the size constraints. Generally coolers get better as they get bigger due to the increase in surface area. Need to know how much space that you are going to have to play with before recommending anything.

Not entirely sure tbh. Id like to get opinions on some decent ones I guess wide sinks but not tall ones like a Ninja would do. Then atleast once I have the names I can look to see if they fit with the particular case etc...

The thermaltake blue orb II is very good and low, just really wide. Its 14cm across!

as flewis said the blue orb is a pretty good cooler, should see in the region of 3ghz with that chip and a blue orb, any higher then start looking at the zalman's.

Sounds like you would be after a ThermalRight offering (not to be confused with Thermaltake) they offer low profile but good coolers, might be worth a look

Ask anyone who overclocked a Barton (seriously, not farted about in the bios) and the king of air coolers was the Si97, the same followed with A64- the XP120 was king of air coolers until scythe came along

The XP120 is a good cooler but not sure how low profile it is when you strap a fan on top?

Edit/ Just realised ive got the LC17 htpc case you are thinking of getting, I;m using a thermaltake blue orb on a Pentium D 930 for the record

Oooo even better Howz the temps in the case then? Because a Pentium D 930 runs hotter than a Core 2 doesn't it? Also I was just comparing the NorthQ to the aluminium and copper Zalman you linked and go to see its the same as the full copper Zalman of the same line lol just rebadged! You reckon this thing would fit in your case?

Or the infamous Arctic Freezer 7 Pro?

For a cooler im not too fussed if it does stuff like the Titan 55 is justified but preferable no more than 25 or so.

The temps are pretty good on the Pentium D, I run it at the stock 3ghz, never goes about 45C usually under load.

I dont think the freezer pro would fit, the titan might, just, would need to check dimensions.
However i dont think the titan is suitable for a htpc system, because it has 2 92mm fans rather than a 120mm and also its really only worth getting it for heavily overclocked pc's.

Yeh, low profile would be a ThermalTake/Right offering or a lowprofile Zalman.

The Titan isnt really for HTPC.

phooieee BUT! Having said that I read that the titan's fans run at about 1500 rpm for under 20 dba noise level. Dimensions say 90mm x 90mm x 160mm. Is 160mm too long? This pic is a zalman 7700 (120mm heatsink) http://www.htpcnews.com/forums/uploa...1124388710.jpg
so 160 should be a lil bit more I guess but not too much I hope.

It would be a pretty good cooler though to have in there because from what I see most OC'ed chips don't give it any problems at all. I'm more worried that I'd make a repeat of what my Antec Overture (Athlon XP) is now it hits 60 at load. Don't want to be going that route again lol.
