    Arrow New Gaming Rig

    Hi there,

I'll finally be upgrading to a new system within the next 3 weeks, just in time for Supreme Commander and the spec will be as follows:

    CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core QX6700, 775, 2.66 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache, Retail
Motherboard: Either the ASUS Striker Extreme or the Gigabyte N680SLI-DQ6 (If Scan ever stock's the gigabyte that is), which is the better board?
GPU: Either the Asus, BFG or EVGA 8800GTX - Which is the best one of the three as I've always used either Asus or Sapphire.
    Memory: 2Gb (2X1Gb) Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2 Dominator, PC8500, 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered,CAS 5-5-5-15, EPP
Primary HDD: 2x 150 Gb Western Digital WD1500ADFD Raptor Enterprise on RAID-0
Extra HDD's: 2x 750 Gb Seagate ST3750640AS Barracuda 7200.10 - I haven't used seagate drives for a few years ever since a bout of failures with the ones I brought, I usually only buy Western Digital ones, are these new seagate drives any good? I wouldn't mind getting the new HGST 1Tb drives, does anyone know when they will be available in the UK?
PSU: 1000W Enermax EG1000EWL V2 Galaxy Modular PSU
    Case: Existing Lian-Li PC-V2100B Plus
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista 32Bit OEM - I don't require the 64Bit for my intel cpu do I?

    WaterCooling (2 Loops) [1/2" ID]
De-ionized Water with Zerex Cooling Solution
    Zalman Super Thermal Grease ZM-STG1

    CPU Cooling
    Swiftech Apogee GT CPU Waterblock
Alphacool Black Ice GT Stealth II (Dual 120mm) Radiator
    SilenX 120mm - 14dBA - 72CFM iXtrema Pro LED Fan x2 (for Radiator)
    Alphacool Laing DDC-Pump 12V Ultra
    Typhoon Single 5.25" Bay Reservoir
    DangerDen UV Reactive Tubing

    GPU Cooling
Swiftech MCW60 VGA waterblock with MCW60 G80 adapter plate, MC14 BGA RamSinks & MicroCool MosfetSink's
Alphacool Black Ice GT Stealth II (Dual 120mm) Radiator
    SilenX 120mm - 14dBA - 72CFM iXtrema Pro LED Fan x2 (for Radiator)
    Alphacool Laing DDC-Pump 12V Ultra
    Typhoon Single 5.25" Bay Reservoir
    DangerDen UV Reactive Tubing

I'd like to Overclock the CPU to at least 3.6Ghz, i'm sure the watercooling setup should be able to cope with it, but will the Motherboard/Memory be ok with it too?

Almost all the hardware will be purchased from Scan except for the parts they don't stock to which I've sourced elsewhere.

    TIA, James.

Why, isn't the cooling solution I've chosen enough for the setup?

I've got about £3200 give or take a few quid.

Seems way too much of an overkill, go for an E6400 or E6600 instead, I can get my E6400 to about 3.6Ghz stable!

Gigabyte DS4, decent 580W PSU, 8800GTX, nice cooler (Tuniq tower), Antec case, a few 500GB SATAs, sorted!

Not rich, I haven't had a system upgrade in a couple of years, except for additional hdd's & the graphics card that I had to replace when my X800 XTPE died.

I intend to use the PC for gaming, some video encoding and as a HTPC to view h.264 HD files which my current pc can't cope with. Hopefully this new rig should last me another 2 years or so.

I've already got the Lian-Li V2100B, so why would I replace it with an Antec one?
I require a fair bit of storage, the bigger the drives the better. My current PSU is 620Watt and it won't be enough power for the system upgrade with additional HDD's n such.

What temps do you get from your O/C'd E6400 at 3.6GHz with that aircooler?

You dont need 2 loops. It will just clutter things and make it harder to work on and itll be noisy.

If you want more than enough cooling, get a Thermochill PA120.3 radiator, Swiftech Storm CPU block, mcp655/d5 pump, GTX block of your choice, yate loon fans, single rez of choice, tubing of choice, 1/2" fittings.

3.6ghz isnt guaranteed, even with mega cooling.

And get yourself a fan controller, its just madness buying all top of the range bits and letting it sound like a knackered moped.

    Already got a fan controller
The trouble with the Thermochill PA120.3 radiator is the space that is required, if I install it in the bottom of my case then I will only have room for 1 HDD rack as apposed to 2 HDD Racks with a twin 120mm rad. If I install it in the top of the case then it will interfere with the motherboard and any slots currently being used in the top section of the board.

I don't see how it will clutter things with proper cable management and the mass amounts of space you get inside a lian-li V2100 case, plus the fans that i'll be using are only 14Db so I doubt I will need to use them with my fan controller, still, it's there as an option. Can't say i've ever heard of yate loon fans?

I prefer the Apogee GT Block myself, i've heard that the storm ports get blocked easily, that true?

Are those DDC Ultra pumps noisy? As they are supposed to be quiet, I was originally going to get dual Laing D5-Vario pumps and set them at medium ( for lower noise) but have been told that the DDC Ultra pumps are quieter and perform better.

If I install it in the top of the case then it will interfere with the motherboard and any slots currently being used in the top section of the board. (put it on the back on a radbox, I did it on a V1000 and it worked fine)

I don't see how it will clutter things with proper cable management and the mass amounts of space you get inside a lian-li V2100 case (Trust me, 2 x dual rads will use a lot of room), plus the fans that i'll be using are only 14Db so I doubt I will need to use them with my fan controller (you sure that those fans are powerful enough to effectively blow air through the dual rad?), still, it's there as an option. Can't say i've ever heard of yate loon fans? (have a look on fleabay, seller called silencio_777 plenty of yate loons available - they are the same as nexus, but without the uk price premium)

I prefer the Apogee GT Block myself, i've heard that the storm ports get blocked easily, that true? (ive been running an AquaXtreme mp-05 pro le, which also uses the small hose to force the water through for over a year now and it has never blocked up, thats another block to consider, it has arguably as good cooling power as the storm, but with a lower price, if you use clean water and only 5% zerex and flush everything with vinegar every once in a while, it wont get blocked)

Are those DDC Ultra pumps noisy? (Not used them, but im guessing that 2 of them, coupled with 4 rad fans will be, also consider the vibration, especially in your case) As they are supposed to be quiet, I was originally going to get dual Laing D5-Vario pumps and set them at medium ( for lower noise) but have been told that the DDC Ultra pumps are quieter and perform better. For your setup, dual pumps, dual rads etc is just a pointless waste of cash

To be honest £3200 is a lot of money especially for a computer, take into account the high depreciation of computers (new kit coming out etc) I think the money could be much better spent.

You could get a super PC for just around a grand, and the performance wouldn't be too far off the above system, then it gives you a bit more money to play with.

Why not get SCAN to build you the system, as if I had that much money to spend I'd get someone else to build it all so it saves me the hassle etc.

Obviously if you want to spend £3200 then go ahead, however it all depends on what you use your PC for, let us know what you want the PC to do, and how you want it to look etc (SFF / silence etc) and then it can be better tailored

Untill it goes wrong and you have no warranty.

£3000 system for piece of mind its always better done by the proffesionals especially when water cooling.

If you would like assistance please feel free to PM your requirments

    ^^A bit messy tbh!

I would agree, 2 loops seems overkill, but maybe you have SLI in mind?? I've found that a good dual rad is enough for 3 blocks with a good pump. I guess Clunk might be talking about extra fans in regards to noise. Really a pump should be fairly quiet with no air and good mounting.

Recently had Silverstone fans recommended to me as "much better than Akasa Amber for noise/cfm" by a guy I trust a lot, maybe look into those fans.
