What flying games are ppl playing??

I'm a HUGE fan of flying sims but they are usually pretty awful on the PC !

The best I've ever played (wins hands down easily) is Ace Combat 4 on the PS2 (didnt play Ace Combat 5 yet) - great variety of planes and missions, enough realism and most importantly it looked awesome!!

I would really truly sincerely absolutely love to get a great combat flying sim on my PC - so if anyone could let me know what is good I'd appreciate it loads !! Online Mutliplayer dog fights would seriously knock my socks off.

    welcome to Hexus

I don't think that many people would call Ace Combat 4 a sim ....
Given your request for online MP for props you probably want the Il2 series (latest is IL2 Sturmovik 1946) & for jets probably LOMAC or Falcon4 but they have a bit of a learning curve.

I used to play Aces High (and Air Warrior before that, years and years and years ago!) - that's online multiplayer and an absolute blast, if you like WWII stuff. In fact I think you've inspired me to dust off t'old Microsoft Sidewinder and have a go

World War II Online also has flight combat.

Funny to think now, used to play Air Warrior via a modem at some ridiculous cost-per-minute, I think it was the Windows 95 or even 3.1 days, and nothing has really beat it.

Ace Combat 4 on the PS2

    LOL !!!!

get a real game bud, not a "console" based sim..

IL2 1946 is the current sim hit for playability

ok looks like IL2 1946 has the votes!

I knew I'd get a bashing for mentioning a console here! But has anyone here even played Ace Combat?? you shouldn't poo poo it cos its actually quite good for an old game (granted may not be a full sim without all the buttons / dials / etc) but it delivered what I needed ... decent air combat.

Fingers crossed for IL-1946 !! I may even go out and buy it today

I looked at Falcon 4.0 but its out of stock... and I could find air warrior or aces high :-( any other REALLY GOOD jet combat games?

btw: Cloudane - did you ever play THX attack helicopter (Comanche maybe?) this is a really old helicopter sim.. proper proper old (I'm not even sure if it was in color?)

i used to play air (or was it ace) combat on the Ps2.. was a laugh when drunk

IL2 1946 is around £15, and play should have it if you have a local one, although asking is the best bet as they tend to have 1 empty box hidden away and a dozen in the draw.

oh and if you do buy it, download hyperlobby and set hyperlobby to forgotten battles and point it to IL2 http://hyperfighter.sk/

i am G0nzo if you get it

I remember Gunship on my Amiga that used the Apache. That wasn't too bad for its day. 3D and in colour!

I'm sure it was on the PC I think it was called THX Attack Helicoptor - I'm gonna ask my brothers they'll remember! I never had an Amiga, just commodore64 and a BBC micro (with a 5 1/4" disk drive which is still around somewhere I think?)

I brought both Falcon 4.0 and IL 1946 for 25 quid (for the two) from Game.
I installed them both and had a quick look but I need to read the manual, even though IL 1946 didnt come with a paper manual!

Tried Flight Sim X after seeing marvellous screenshots here and there...mmm..jerkovision prevailed so i uninstalled and sold it on.

There's not many games out there that give a real sense of speed while flying IMO...the games already mentioned are about the best though.

Oh well, must have been my settings as you say..might pick it up again and give it another go. Definitely won't be able to play it with full settings though I am sure.

ok my bro not only remembered what the game was ... but also found it to download a few months back !! It was called LHX Attack Chopper ! He even says it was made by EA !! Check this link to see the sort of graphics I'm talking about!

    www . freeoldies . com / fo_game . php ? id=1782&lang=us

(sorry I had to break the URL up cos i dont have 5 posts yet!)

Todays flight sims dont seem to look much better than this (considering what today's FPS shooters look like) - I would try flight Sim X but there's no combat is there?

I really want a PC version of Ace Combat ... anyone ??

    You're kidding, right?
1 of the problems that flight sims have though is that they have to be able to show vast areas & more often than not that area has to be realistic (i.e. you can find it on a map & compare) which is why terrain textures aren't up to the same level as in an fps. Plus you need collision detection for it all which can be a resource hog.
Exterior models & in cockpit are usually very good though.

The other problem that we have now is that sims are very expensive to make & other than MSFS have a small sales volume (& many of the customers are very picky about inaccuracies) so they aren't very profitable. This means very few new games - currently there is a bit of a trend to tart up an old one (F4AF, BoB II, EECH2 etc.) rather than build a whole new one.
