wayhey, sommat i can comment on
well me n me dad have been doin this kinda thing for a while, specifically WW1 planes, cus thier nice
neway, first big project was a fokker triplane, Dr1, in the colours of the red baron.
now, this took around a year to complete, and u can see it going step by step here...
After that we bought a De Haivilland Tiger Moth Kit, it isn't finished yet, but is very close, the fuselage, wings and tailplane are all constructed, they have been covered and now putting them all together is taking place, the tiger moth has a wingspan of 82" and the triplane that of 73"
These are not small models. Hat, if i were u, id get down to ure local model shop, get talking to the people there, thier very helpful and will recommend u good stuff. u need a lot of specialist stuff to build these, and a local model shop trip is not only a good way to get out the house and look at all the pretty models, but u can pretty much guarentee that they will have everything u need to complete the model.
Will post some pics of the tiger moth when i can find some
Our next plan is to go a bit more independant of kits and we have bought another fokker triplane kit and have got the plans of a 1/6 model of a sopwith camel. we are enlarging the plans up to 1/4 scale and then using the parts from the triplane to make a camel instead, shud be a good venture
one thing to consider hat is that the kit is not all u have to buy, u have the radio equipment (usually coming to over 200 quid) the engine (another 100 - 200) the fuel for it, (quite cheap) all ure tools, the glue the covering etc etc
HTH Matey need ne more advice and ill be glad to help
Fraggie
nice one fraggie.... expecvt to hear from me as the project unfolds.
If im gonna do it.. im gonna go big.. 1.3 or 1/4 scale is fun FUN FUN.
Ill do a trainer one first.. then im going straight into the bigtime
WHat scale is that dr1?

1/4 scale dr1, its big, barely fits in the room, and the tiger moth needs to be constructed outside
these things take up a lot of room, so make sure u got it
1/3 scale kits aint easy to find as its quite an unusual size
also, if u plan on flying these, u will have to check ure local aeromoddling club, thier regulations on size of aircraft and also the BMFA (which u will need to become a member of if u wanna fly.
bmfa.org
i think if the plane is over a certain size u cant fly it at some clubs, or if its over a certain weight u may need to gain certain certificates to fly them. some models need local aviation authorities permission as they are classed as small aircraft. These things can be dangerous. Normally with 1/4 ull be ok, its around about the limit of weight (7.5kg i think) and u shud be able to fly them no probs, if u go over that ure looking at more money to get certificates, permission from the LAA and u may have to take it to an airfield to fly it.
We started with a trainer for a start
Our little hooligan
now as ive sed weve moved onto the bigger stuff and got the triplane and the tiger moth (the triplane has an engine in now btw )
and
a non finished tiger moth, this is the latest pic we have but it is far more advanced then this, we now have covering and a tailplane. so will get more pictures when its done
We have 2 more kits (inc the sopwith camel / triplane experiment) to go so we got plenty of stuff to do
where did you buy your kits from? in the UK?
yeh, got them from Flair Products
Shud be stocked at ure local model shop
I built a couple of r/c planes in the past, in fact, I've got this *huuuuuge* glider up in the loft still
(\__/)
(='.'=)
(")_(")
A year to construct, thirty seconds to crash
'Make mine a Spitfire, Landlord!'
My uncle had an r/c helicopter - ended up costing him a fortune in rotor blades :|
replacement parts all the time?
all i can say is hat deep end ant the right way to go wiv rc models i used to races cars and the 1st week i got 1 i musta crashed it like 20 times and was costing me a bomb but there bloody worth haveing
LOL Go for it Hat Ill come up some weekends to help
Only after he has finished rebuilding his house! So some time in the next millenium :-)
jus an update on the tiger moth,
