A little F-15 track..

I thought I'd do a little track to demonstrate how to use the F-15 to knock out several Migs simultaneously. Once you get used to the quirks with the Radar and AMRAAMS, the F-15 is a truly awesome bit of kit, especially with its ability to track and fire on multiple targets.

In the track you will see it is quite straightforward, but tricky all the same - Multiple contacts often show up as only 1, particularly when flying in close formation - for the purpose of this demo I spaced them out a bit.

What you see here is me firstly gaining a slight altitude advantage to give my missiles a bit more energy - then I point the radar cone down to paint the contacts below. The default radar mode is RWS (Range While Scan) - by hitting Alt-I it switches to TWS (Track while scan), showing the contacts and their altitude.

You can see the difficulty here is designating the individual targets without undesignating the previous one - I eventually get it lol

As I get in range I merely fire off a succession of shots, as each AMRAAM leaves it automatically tracks the next taget. I fire the 4th one for luck - result - 3 dead Migs ;)

TWS mode is great isn't it. :D

Strangely it's not modelled on the MiG29S. That can track 2 targets with the R77, yet it's not featured in LOMAC. :(

Dont know whether i was seing a bug but when i was playing with TWS i could see the targets but i could only lock one up at a time. I was definately in TWS mode.

Can you post the keystrokes to lock up more than one in TWS so i can double check what im doing.

Ok, set yourself up a nice little mission with 4 targets flying directly towards you. Space them out a little bit so it's easier to lock them up. As Skii says when you're flying close together they appear as one target (hence why we spend so much time practicing formation flying).

Once you're in game select BVR mode by pressing two. Select AIM-120S (critical!). Turn your radar to active mode by pressing I. You should see the targets ahead on the radar. Go into TWS mode by pressing Alt+I. Look at the radar MFD - it should show up as TWS in the bottom left hand of the screen. Using the , . / ; keys move the twin vertical lines over the first target. Press Tab to lock the sucka up. Once he's locked up move the I I over the next target. Lock him up with tab. Do this for all the targets.

Once you're all locked up and in range ripple fire the AIM-120s and sit back and enjoy the massacre. :D

The F-15 radar is VERY quirky when it comes to scan range, you need to use the shift , . ; / keys to manually adjust the scan cone to paint the targets - you can literally be flying just slightly too high and you won't see the contacts until you swing your scan cone down.

Problem is as Lowe says when your enemy are flying in close formation 1) the radar assumes its 1 contact, 2) Its difficult to individually designate each contact, if you designate a contact in TWS mode that is already desgnated, it switches back to STT (Single Target Track)

I've got the slew radar set up as Windows key and hat so im fine with that. It is a problem when they formation fly though - true enough you just cant lock those bad boys up :(

Formation flying isn't just for pretty screenshots, it serves a vital function of keeping one plane out of the way on the radar screen of your foe... Of course once a missile comes flying your way you never quite know who's been fired upon, but at least one person should make it out of there in one piece rather than both of you having an AMRAAM after you!
