    Il2 mission. Help needed

I am struggling with one of the fighter missions in il2 USSR fighter campaign.

Basically there is 2 wings of fighters, that have to stop two wings of bombers from bombing some trucks.

I just can't beat it. I can take 1 or two planes down, but then i either run out of ammo, or get shot, as i try to get as close as possible to save ammo. Then theres the second wing of bombers, which is supposedly taken care off by second wing of fighters, but they are often useless and the bombers get through.

I do get close behind the bombers, but they seem to be able to take a lot of punishment, i end up shooting their gear off but they carry on regardless

Any tips on how best to bring em down?

    Any advice?

i'd advise you get as close as possible and choose one engine to fire at, a few short controlled bursts should be enough to get it smoking nicely and force it to rtb

Knoxxy does damage bombers with a passion verging on WW2 hysteria I've seen him....so pay heed

You're looking for summit to stop the plane, and riddling the fueselage with bullets just makes them lighter

Engine...or if you have big cannons.....and if you can aim well enough....root of the wing, to get it to fall off!

Note: I am NOT good enough to do these things....so ignore me, by all means.

If the bombers are He111s get in front of them and hose the cockpit with mg rounds, you'll get a Pilot Kill every time

    I'll try that then, ta.

Any advice on avoiding bomber gunner fire while i am at it? I try to be a bit lower, but they still occasionally manage some hits.

The AI gunners are very Uber unfortunately, but with German bombers you just need to stay fast and not in the same spot for very long - ie don't park up behind him and stay there.

Carry out slashing attacks, start on one side of him and turn into him, or dive steeply at him - take a well aimed shot, and turn away jinking to avoid return fire, the German Mgs are only single mounts and small calibre, so you can shrug off a fair few hits.

Stay fast, stay unpredicteable, and don't park up to deliver the coup-de-grace, however tempting it may be

Also, if you are in the lead aircraft, or leading a flight, you can order your flight/wing to attack the bombers using your radio function - press tab and some red text will appear in the top left of your screen with nmumbers next to it. Press the corresponding number for the command you want and they *should* do your bidding...

Nah, i am lowest wingman, i shoulda selected higher rank when starting the campaign. Bastards do what they like and shout at me if i run off to kill the germans.

For what its worth my tips as follows

    1. As Skii said head on with HE111s, I try to come from 500m higher and shatter the cockpit.
    2. Stukas come at them from underneath.
    3. JU88s Engine damaged usually sends em home

Aim for engines, bomb load or pilots.

Use the zoom key to help your aim

Dont hang around in the cone of fire from their gunners

If you have to pass across their gunsights, make sure you do it quickly

Try various methods of attack.. for example, a high frontal attack on Heinkels works well.

....agree with Hat. And try not to fly straight 'n level for too long. Get height to dive on them, and use speed and manouvreability - don't hang on their tails trying to match their speed.

Remember when your guns are effective - bullets or shells fired from too far away are A. more likely to miss, and B. less effective when they hit. Wait until you have good convergence before firing, and get close - if you are doing it right you will only have a split second to get the shot in, but it'll be more effective than sitting on their tails and firing froma distance.

If you can do it a dive on them from above, hitting them in the wing, can be very effective - the wings often break apart on the JU-88 and HE-111.

Hmmm, managed to kill/turn away the bombers, but fighters kept bugging me and it never said mission accomplished(had a broken engine by then too).

Is there a way to find out if mission is accomplished? Coz if u miss when they show it on screen its hard to know. And if u quit mission and its not complete theres no way to come back.
