Use the winxp switch.
Im using it on Win 7-x64 build 7100. You having problems ?
If you buy a boxed copy does it install through steam?
Works fine for me with Windows 7.
Had troubles installing the patch but all seems to work OK now.
i heard this game is very CPU bound and one of the first games to actually show the true power of an i7 cpu
Single player is CPU heavy (AI etc).
Multiplayer isn't so hard on the client CPU because the server handles the AI. :)
Oh - and the MP guide is getting there, wrote a bit earlier. :)
when is the demo out?
Just in case anyone has a problem of the game refusing to run (crashing) after installation.... patch 1.02 fixed it for me.
Got my first kills in Domination yesterday :) i dont think the 9 people appreciated my flying skills though when we crashed out of nowhere
Hint for those of you flying on Domination maps:
Currently there are no flares on the aircraft (will be addressed with mods shortly no doubt) so your only way of avoiding being shot down is simply not to overfly areas which are populated. If you see a red blob on the radar, fly around it. Once infantry have taken out any AAA then you're free to fly over and take stuff out.
Download fail corrupt file.
Demo was out yesterday at 2pm GMT, started the download remotely by bittorrent (linked from a mod of Arma2's official forums) and it didn't finish until 10pm last night. Didn't matter though, was in no rush.
Quick installation, loaded it up and started the training missions.
Controls were really difficult to get used to, so many of them, especially commands. Fighting enemy AI even on normal difficulty level was really hard. On the Basic Training mission you have to assault a little village at the end, after about 5 attempts (considering you have to start the training from the beginning so it takes AGES) I gave up and moved on.
Parachuting was also very difficult, you were giving no help on what to do or how to decend, where to aim etc, so I ended up circling around a few times and after 3 attempts I couldn't get closer than 5 metres, which I thought wasn't that bad.
Helicopter training next..... One word..... DAMN! I spent well over an hour flying the different types of helicopters available and it is difficult! After about an hour flying I think I can take off, fly to a location and land safely (whilst having to rely on auto-hover to come to a stop every time though), but the fighting part is too much. You have to concentrate so much keeping the heli in the air that you can't do that as well as target, select weapons and fire as well. Well, not yet anyway.
That's about it, 3 hours training, most of which was a failure. I still have lots to learn it seems and this is going to be a totally different game to any other I have played. I can't wait for payday when I can buy it! I must be mad!
There's lots of keys yes, but as you'll find with more play time most aren't needed. The important ones are basic movement, crounch/prone/stand, lean/roll, reload and map. Other than that everything else is fairly incidental and you won't be hitting them that much. :)
The AI are good. Very, very good - possibly too much so, especially since the grass doesn't actually affect them in the slightest.
Parachuting isn't that difficult really, once you're in the air pressing forward speeds you up (which also speeds up your descent rate) and pressing back will slow you down and slow down the descent rate. Left and right steers - couldn't be simpler. Wait till you try parachuting in ACE, that's a serious challenge since if you slow down too much and brake too hard you can cause problems with the chute and collapse it. Not fun! :D
Helecopters aren't so bad and the flight model is really simplified compared to real chopper sims. Once you get around the principles of chopper flight you'll find it a doddle. In a nutshell though its easiest when you set the keys up to be like the following:
Up/Down - how much power the rotors generate (controls altitude)
Left/Right - pedal left/right (will control rudder/tail rotor)
Mouse Up/Down - Pitch (controls where the nose points)
Mouse Left/Right - Roll left/right (banks one way or the other)
Once set up like this get in the chopper and fire it up. Hold up and you'll lift into the air. Don't move the mouse and you'll find the chopper will naturally hover. Press left and right and you'll find the chopper rotating on a flat axis (very handy, but this won't work the faster you go). Dip the nose and the chopper will accelerate forward - note that you may need to increase power otherwise you'll lose altitude. Pull the nose back and you'll decelerate and eventually fly backwards. Rolling left or right when in a hover will make the chopper side slip to a certain extent (you may need to kick a bit of opposite pedal to keep it straight) :) It'll come with practice and you'll be throwing them around without a care soon enough hehe.!
As I keep banging on, ArmA is unlike anything most people will have played before so the learning curve is *steep*. However, the satisfaction at the end of it when you're working in a good team and everything starts to fall into place is *immense* and well worth it! :)
