Too much to type here but in a nutshell, avoid the demo. It's useless. Secondly think of ArmA as being the building blocks for something else. Whilst it's a 'game' is more of an engine to allow modders to go nuts building something which plays and works a lot better!
Current, ArmA itself isn't really played that much in its original form - instead most people play ACE which is an online realism mod that sorts out most of the gameplay problems with the original game and also makes it a lot more fun. ACE is going to be brought over to ArmA 2 - so far they're saying a fortnight after ArmA 2 is released.
So... take Jiff up on his offer and if you like we'll get you up and running, at least to the point where when you get ArmA2 you'll understand what the fuss is about!
there a group of us who do arma we are all getting arma 2
any pointers for a good ARMA server, played in the past and just reinstalled to get some pre A2 practice. Also getting ACE anything else I need ?
search for iGi think our servers public atm and we are an easy going bunch. Cept for VW
Yup, have a nosy on iGi though it's relatively quiet at the moment since a few of the lads bought the German ArmA 2 and are getting ahead of the rest of us, heh!

Ive just installed it to get my hand in before A2 comes out, but have to say the specific mods you need or each serever are a soddin nightmare.

Think Ive finally got the mods sorted in ARMA1, using Arma launcehr to selct which mod for what server.. Practice time

Currently you need:
ArmA itself
Arma 1.16b Patch
ACE 1.08
ACE 1.09 Hotfix.
Don't bother playing normal ArmA - just search for servers running ACE.
iGi and AI53rd are a good starting point, usually people on those

ace is a mod that changes the gameplay, adds more weapons,etc
ACE is what ArmA should have been like at release, and ArmA 2 is quite a lot like it lol!
