Re: Armed Assault - a guide

well, at the moment I'm struggling to get out of the shooting range part of bootcamp.

I had to kill the bloke eventually and restart the mission.

HOW do I get the conversation screen back up once it's closed?

I was offered 1 Assualt Course 2 shooting range etc.

Did assault course and once it was finished was asked what next? Chose 2 shooting range, and one there and havinfg unloaded a clip, was given a "challenge" which simple tells me I'm crap even when I'm hitting everything, so I redid it a few times and then the menu to leave it disappeared so after 5 minutes running round and round him, and running up the shooting range I eventuially killed him in the face.

Is this the kind of "bug" people slag ARMA off for?

Ordered mine, its on it's way (Hopefully!)
Hmm I think I want a new GFX Card to give my system a tiny little boost.
Any suggestions on what that Mobo can support effectively?

Re: Armed Assault - a guide

Had a really good game on the silent warriors server last night, ended up as a squad sniper so sat on a hill suporting my lads, got 40 / 3 while sniping. Have been suprised at the lack of voice comms being used, even logged in to the TS server and it was just people chatting. Maybe the organised squads were keeping it local.

And hint of the day, avoid crossing in front of people if possible, just because you cant see a threat doesent mean they havent. Watched a good TK argument kick off when a new player ran across the line of fire of an MG that was concentrating on a vehicle with mg gunner, the deceased couldnt understand why the MG was firing. One that Ive only just spotted is that you can climb over low fences (think its v). The flag in your base (normally where you spawn) lets you teleport to the mobile command vehicles, and when you capture a town the paradrop flag lets you select where to parachute to. In both cases walk uo to flag and use the mouse wheel menu to select teleport or paradrop.

The game sort of runs on my laptop but only on minimum settings and looks pants.

Still it has given me a feel for the game, so once my main rig is back up I'll be joining you lot

I've got an 8800 as shown in my spec. and I'm finding it unplayable.
I believe it's down to my monitor's native res of 1920x1200.
Despite changing res/settings in all sorts of ways, my fps hasn't changed more than by about 10...
I thought I could cope at first (30fps in open areas), but as soon as I went into a built up area it halved.

I was considering upgrading to something like a GTX 260, but I'm unsure if it would be worthwhile and if the CPU would be the bottleneck.

I'm not really concerned about running it on high, just want it to be smooth.

Re: Armed Assault - a guide

Well I have been considering upgrading my GFX Card for a while so think I may well do it either this month or next month if I can justify spending the money on the card and what else I will need to the card fits.
(Will have to move my Hard Drives up to my DVD Drive bays, so will have to buy stuff for that)

Re: Armed Assault - a guide

enjoying arma 2 a tiny bit last night. i was playing with two people o know in two servers and both times we couldnt make out what to do and what our objectives are.

Online seems to be a hit and miss atm. i enjoyed it when bockster1st hosted a simple coop game where us two plus swanny i think was trying to attack a village near by our respawn point. we diddnt have to walk/drive 100miles for some action, we was respawned right next the hot zone and it was fun.

The problem with most servers i have seen is that no1 seems to know what the objective is and what to do. no one is communicating and working as a team and no one knows where there squad members are or who the commander is.

The commander is suppose to give orders to us yet most of the time im awaiting orders all the time and just stuck on the air field base doing nothing.

I headed over into the OCUK server which is a domination coop game with humans vs AI and it was boring for the same reason i stated above. if we can get 3 or 4 of us guys in one squad i reckon we can get something going. we need someone who can fly and drop us into the hot spot so we can begin our attack but atm not many know how to fly a plane/heli.

I also feel that we need some tanks and armoured vehicles around the hot spots as going there by foot is a no no. Just like in a real war(as far as i can see) you dont just walk towards a hot spot and start blasting your way through, you normally have air support that levels the are if there are no civilians and also have armed vehicles at present creating open paths for people on foot to go in and attack.

Overall this game needs teamwork and communication for it to be fun online. i have not tried SP mode as im hearing awful things about the friendly ai being rubbish so i will stick with MP mode as i dont have to deal with retarded squad members in SP mode.

like i said before, Xfire needs to be enabled so whenever i see you guys online i can easily join whatever server your currently on and also message u in-game as people seem to ignore the global in game chat system in arma 2

not on a 19" monitor like you've got bud

People with 24" monitors are gonna struggle.. but that's at 1900 x1200 kinda thing.

Besides.. I've just played for an hour, and it's all at night, with image internsifier goggles.. so it's grainy as hell anyway!

Re: Armed Assault - a guide

Right I'll try and answer some points here but I’m sure Lowe will come along and put my post to shame

The menu system uses the mouse scroll wheel mainly to scroll up/down. Pushing the scroll wheel in (button 3?) activates the highlighted command. Right click to cancel/back on the menu.

It does sound like you had some bugthere Zak. Running away from the range should have cancelled it and should have asked if you want to restart.

In-game voice comms are broken in the current patch and should be fixed the next patch hopefully. This is one of the reasons that’s causing so much grief.

When shooting remember your stance (prone / kneeling / standing) and your breathing. Breathing and moving has a Massive effect on your accuracy.

If you run along you start to hear yourself breathing harder, if you drop prone (z) and aim (right click) you can see the point of aim going all over the place. Pause at this stage, get a bead on the target but just let the sights hover around the target. Give it a few seconds and you’ll hear the breathing slowdown and the point of aim stop moving / move a lot less.

At this stage on most weapons you can hold the right mouse button to ‘zoom in’ slightly to the sights and you hold your breath. Remember you can’t stay like that for to long and when you release it the accuracy will be very poor again.

    Deliberate fire is 1 round every 6 seconds. Just count that out now… Fire, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Fire…

    Rapid fire is 1 round every 2 seconds… err I think. That’s bad I can’t remember that 100%.

I could post up all my marksmanship principles and other rules etc. but most of it directly talks about how to hold the rifle. Kind of pointless for a game I’ll try and find the details for aiming off and wind levels when I’m home. Aiming off for distance is vital but I have not been able to tell if there’s wind ingame yet.
