How are you ARMA2 noobs finding it ?

I'm still new too, but I'm grasping stuff every day.

This is where to ask stuff. And if ayone wants a one on one tell me and I'll try to set it up, as Lowe did for me, to hep you grasp it. I don't know the tweaks and tricks but it's much better with someone close by helping

I can't remember a game that has had me addicted, annoyed, exasperated and enjoying myself in equal measure quite like this one!

I'm terrible but I'm starting to get there.. in about two years I should be a fairly below average player. I've not tried multiplayer yet but I probably will at some point (when I'm not too ashamed to show up on a server.)

Pollaxe - get your backside over to the iGi server.

Seriously you're missing out on a huge aspect of the game. SP has absolutely *nothing* on the MP aspect. Nothing beats the feeling of working closely with a few other guys, watching out for each other and generally kicking backside.

Swallow your pride mate, come give it a go.

pollaxe.. I'ver not played ANY singleplayer at all... it just confused me when I was in boot camp.

Get online and I can help you for a while.

Could you install teamspeak and get online on comms just with me, if you're shy to be onliner with other people on the public mumble server? I can host a teamspeak server myself if you'd like.

It's a really hard game... but it's worth the effort. PM me if you're interested and I'll try to make a spot of time for you

I' try and avoid the vehicles when on the MP, i'm just not particuly good enough. Think i'm doing alright as an infantryman though, seem to get good kills.
Finding fighting through the towns much easier than open ground or forest though.
Game is truely epic though and keeping me hooked.

I'm not..yet. I've put purchasing this game on hold for the moment.

I'm not getting this game until I've moved next month and got my own internet connection instead of leeching from Steve A's bandwidth as I'm right at the edge of the wi-fi access he has and as you can imagine latency is insane at times.

I loved it, even though I spent most of last night being near-dangerously useless

Looking forward to playing a few more games and getting a bit better at it though.

Re: How are you ARMA2 noobs finding it ?

Lowe and Zak - cheers guys - I really appreciate your kind offers! I'm currently on the verge of a major system blat and reinstall so I'm going to delay this for a little bit...

I have two HD 4890s on the way from the recent current bargains thread here which means I'm going to give Crossfire a try (probably more headaches but I'm on a 30" monitor so it's worth a pop) but I promise I'll have a go (may not be til the week after next though!)

I've held off so far not out of pride but more the worry of laming the experience up for everyone else!!

Re: How are you ARMA2 noobs finding it ?

    A few questions:

What "extras" do people tend to have up on screen when they're moving around - I have pulled the compass up a couple of times to give somebody a bearing over VOIP about enemy contact, but pulling the map up usually gets me killed... the watch seems utterly useless though for example

How do you identify an enemy soldier best? I'm used to games where the uniforms look completely different, and/or they have a huge red name tag above their heads. On ARMA I tend to spot an enemy, then worry it's a friendly. By the time I've hovered my reticule over them waiting for a green tag, or looked on the map to see if anybody is there, I've missed the opportunity to fire. On the other hand, I've gunned down a few too many friendlies because they happened to be where I expected enemy soldiers to be, aka ahead of me.

What's the best way to get a good feel for all the different guns/weaponry? I tend to find it's easiest in the hexus/igi games to just pick one and stick with it, because you don't have the time to experiment - but what's the best mode to go for in terms of experimentation. I tried the training, but it was abysmal so I gave up. And I can't imagine pinging a gun against a wall will tell me much about how each performs in combat.

Are there any particular key strokes I might not know about that are useful - the list is so long I haven't really been able to look through it, and for example it took me a very long time to find out you right-clicked to scope, and right-held to zoom... I figured for ages there were no ironsights available.

How on earth do you guys understand what you're meant to be doing? The PvP map was great, I looked at it and 5 points were clearly shown, which I could go up to and cap quite happily... it helped that it was exactly the same as Battlefield 2 in that respect, but it still seemed very easy. On the public server though, there was nothing on the map - I had no idea where I was meant to be. As a result I was just waiting around relying on somebody else to follow, like my squad leader, who wasn't necessarily jumping into combat, leaving me high and dry. There aren't any obvious markings most of the time.

And how do you know which spawnpoint to use? On the PvP map it was good, the map pinged to each location in turn, and you could easily see which to use... on the public server, just the normal three buttons for MR1, MR2 and base - no idea where they were though, so usually ended up in the wrong place.

I think that's about it for now

always be hidden or safe when pulling the map up... it takes an age to close too.

I use compass and never the watch. To KEEP the compas open, double click the same button that yuo hold to open it.

even friendly tags don't always show..with the map open you can idetify where the enemy WAS a few seconds ago.. but it's lagged as though a satellite had to trasnfer the data to you. HOWEVER, friendly tend to show pretty smartly as green.. on the map that is.. so situational awareness is key (it's easier than in IL-2 mind.. in the air it's in 3d so it's a boody mare tbh) I use the map a LOT.. and I tend to lay down when I use it. You can only move when DRIVING something with the map open.. if you open it when running you go to kneeling immeditately.

If you're attacking a town.. on the whole.. the bad guys are in it and friendly corpes litter the boundary

i agree.. find a gun ad stick with it for a while. BUT>. wen equipping at the ammo crates, when yuo click on a gun before taking it, NOTE the kind of ammo it uses.

Most assualt rifles take 5.5 mm (or close to that size...5.6?) and that's the width of the calibre. Te net number is the LENGTH of the sheel that fires it... the longer it is, the more speed and enery it puts behind the round.

Some of the sniper rifles are 7.9 mm (or something close to it) and have huge length to the shell casing to hold all the the blackpower to fire it miles.

a couple of weapons use 12.x (dunno what size exactly) which is a frikkin great big .50 cal (.5 inch) and they go through walls.

A few upclose weapons use 9mm ammo (big hitter) but short casings (less explosive) for sub mahine guns.

So...in essence.. you get a feel for wat they do when you understand what the numbers mean

The most popular gun has to be the M4.

If yuo hit the F key, it changes the firing mode.
Single (you click as fast as your mouse finger will click)
Burst (normall 3 in a row, like the M16 is famous for)
Full is full atomatic....hold the mouse button, it'l fire until empty.

it also gets you into grenades too.

I'm a single cick man unless close up in towns.. the full. (spray ad pray)

As a result I was just waiting around relying on somebody else to follow, like my squad leader, who wasn't necessarily jumping into combat, leaving me high and dry. There aren't any obvious markings most of the time.
keystrokes... nope.. dont know any moe than you except maybe F as above

Domination online is hard to understand. But here it is. When you spawn, go to the map and use your scroll wheel on the mouse to scrioll rightout.. now use your Right mouse button to drag the map around. Find a red area. That's the town to take.

When at the teleport pole at the start, before atually deciding which one to try, click BOTH MR1 and MR2 to see if either Mobile Respawn are at the red town. If so...use it

If NOT... then I tend to use it to teleport to the vehicle close by so I get the right one to drive to the red area

    Or.. parachute in

to open chute, scroll wheel to Open chute option, leave it until you're 300 m or less from tyhe ground and then click the Parwachute Open command. If it's a LONG drop.. keep the mouse whell moving uo keep that menu open or you might not have t when you need it

Oh... Enter key is external view. I use it for parachuting if I get wierd flickering screen and driving the trucks through trees

Re: How are you ARMA2 noobs finding it ?

For getting used to guns give the editor a go. Load up Utes, stick a few AI down one end of the airfield in the middle and yourself at the other. Then you can change kits, vehicles etc by just escaping back to the editor and trying again. It's real simple just to place some units about, just double click and you'll get a menu full of choices.

Also worth remembering that guns are all zero'd at different ranges varying by type and scope; The M4/M16 with aimpoint or ACOG I know is 100m and it's 300m for the larger machine guns like the M240 etc. There's a list in the manual toward the back somewhere. My accuracy went way up once I'd figured that one out.
