What do War Game's need next?

We've got some silky smooth graphics in stuff like CoD4 and W@W and we have gargantuan maps in ARMA2. But we don't have the combination, which is what I crave.

We have Flight Sim's with good combat and great authenticity in the IL-2 series, and we have eye bleedingly-beautiful graphics in HAWX.. but I think not both combined

So.. in essence we need a combo of these good points... but is there anything else we need?

Is there something missing from the War Games genre?

Tell us....big or small...what you crave.

Re: What do War Game's need next?

Gadget Show did a feature on possible future of game interfaces that could be done. The one I was most impressed with was a treadmill with 2 degrees of movement (ie, combined with a VR helmet, it was the closest thing I've seen to the Holodeck from Star Trek. I can't find a video of it unfortunately, but the idea that you can run around yourself in war games sound very appealling. Would certainly stop people bloody bunny hopping all the time!

Re: What do War Game's need next?

I want the squad system they used in Battlefield 2 and 2142 to be more widely implemented, improved, and expanded on, such as having multiple channels to speak to the entire team or your own squad. It means you can more tightly coordinate a small group of people to be more effective without filling the server channel with your mic spam.

It might seem like it encourages players to segregate, but when you consider that if you say "somebody is behind you" to the entire server you make everybody paranoid, whereas if you're on a squad channel only the people it relates to hears it. There's also little point relaying enemy positions to the entire team when only a handfull of you are on the front lines, and they'll have all moved by the time anyone else gets there.

So yeah, give me squads in more games and build on the concept.

Re: What do War Game's need next?

Personally i'd love to see a similar kind of game to ArmA 2 from the WW2 era. Battleground Europe have a similar game without the graphics and a bit too pricey and a little unrefined. But that sort of thing.

If that's the case then ArmA 2 should meet those needs now, OF2 will struggle to come close to ArmA 2 having been dumbed down for consoles.

    But peoples tastes are different.

For me the best will always be ww2 era, and battleground europes ww2 online is one of the best games i've played. I just don't want to have to pay that much a month for it i'm not rich you see....

Re: What do War Game's need next?

    - Realistic damage, i.e. you get shot in the leg you hobble, shot in the arm you can't hold your gun properly, shot in the head... you get the picture.
    - Better squad control. I like the idea of being able to talk to the group of people closest to me in the battlefield. No point telling someone who is at the other of the map to move forward. Actually working as a squad to do things. I find it hard to do this in most war games.
    - Generally just feeling like there is war going on all around you, not just where you are. I've never gotten this from any game tbh, but I feel like it would completely immerse me in the experience if I could see fighting going on in the distance and such.
    - Proper use of camouflage. I think being able to really blend into the environment would be a great experience in multiplayer. Don't know of any game that lets you properly hide amongst the landscape.

Doesn't ARMA 2 cover off most of that...?

It would be nice to play something with more of a persistant/large scale war feel in the multiplayer side, like Planetside when it first came out.

    very good post

Realistic damage model is not bad in ARMA2... I got my legs taken out last time I played and I could stand...but not walk. I fell over. Was quite disconcerting.

Camo... I think the camo in CoD4 is very good. If you lie in long grass with a gillie suit, you just disappear... but in ARMA2, as we all know, it's dreadful, because if you're past 80 metres.. there is no grass and you look like you're lying on a beach.

War-like atmos is hard... and I hate no hearing voice comms.. but that's what combat must be like...so not sure how to do that.

I think CoD4 and 5 do better jobs on atmospheric background noises than Arma.. but Arma does the business on tank directional noises.

Decent WW1 flight sim, with a moving front flyable from 1914 to 1918 and a decent multiplayer aspect

I'd like the realism from Crysis, the movement from Assassins Creed and elements of MGS4

I am the same in regard to ww2 games - this is my favoured epoch.

My most played game is DOD Source, which is essentially a straight forward fps, but i would love to see the mechanics of this game in a larger setting - much like battleground europe. I can only dream
