fao of IL-2 1946'ers with a good working install

May I humbly make a suggestion?

IF you have a good working version of 1946 installed on your PC, patched to the latest, with all your favourite keystrokes etc sorted...

Make a zipped version of the entire file. Maybe burn it to a DVD, as it'll just about fit into 4.7gig.

Because, it won't easily install back into stuff like Vista 64... it RUNS like a dream in Vista64, but installing it... it just won't run from the disk.

So... if you have a cherished install, with all your keystrokes and stuff, with the latest patch and maybe some favourite skins installed and a logo/squadron pack... zip in all together, to back it up and when you need it on a fresh OS install oneday... just unzip it back to where you want it

Prolly illegal in some way, but I KNOW everyone has legit copies cos it's so cheap to buy now... so I'm risking this advice cos it'll save you a LOT of heartache one day.

Equallly runs happily on a 7 64bit install Mr.Zakky. Little bit of fun starting the install (think I had to launch the MSI with admin privledges instead of the autorun) but after that, it's plain sailing.

Good tip all the same though

I had a similiar problem with Win7 64-bit as well. I just copied over the directory from my old hard drive, and it seems to be fine.

Edit: Scrap that. Just patched it frim 4.08m to 4.09m and now it won't run. Complains there's no d3d8.dll, so I downloaded one and put it in the directory and now it just quits as soon as you run it. Same if I change it to OpenGL.

Edit2: Right, it was a SecuROM issue. Downloaded the diagnostic tool, which updated the exe file. Still can't use DirectX, but it does run under OpenGL now.

I was under the impression that it runs better with Open GL anyway??

This one was copied over to this W7 x64 build from the old XP one.

It patched to 4.09m and runs fine.

if you browse the disc, you'll find the setup.exe and another file called a.exe - run that instead of the setup.exe and it'll install no bother on Vista 64. That's how I did it, and then patched as normal.....
